» Compelling content – the key ingredient for social networks
lasgow Chamber works in partnership with Mark Hunter of Postable to deliver a
wide range of social media workshops and we are constantly developing new topics to help businesses stay ahead of the game. Here, Mark promotes the case
for creating compelling content for social networks and talks about the new workshops that help businesses do just that... “Social networking isn’t new.
You could argue that it’s more than 20 years old. Since we could start creating websites, using services like Geocities, people gathered together on these websites discussing ideas, sharing content, networking together. “Now, in 2014, perhaps we take
social networking for granted. Tens of millions of businesses around the world hope customers will connect with them, engage with them, on websites such as Facebook and Twiter. However, one thing is certainly clear in 2014; it can be harder than we anticipated to get the engagement and interactions that we hope for. “Tat’s why it’s important to
remember the key ingredient that
social networks have always required from us; compelling content. “Te average Facebook user, for
example, is potentially bombarded with up to 1,500 status updates per day. Each status update is content. Facebook makes no secret that it wants to make sure the status updates its users see are relevant and useful. “As a result it’s more important
than ever that businesses are creating relevant, compelling and useful content for the social networks they hope will atract customers to them. “So we’ve been working with
Glasgow Chamber to help businesses identify social networking content that will compel their customers to engage with them and, more importantly, do business with them. Tat compelling content should be in text, photo or video format and the Chamber has workshops that will empower businesses to create blog posts, make great images and fantastic YouTube videos that will be compelling to the markets they’re targeting on social networks. “Take YouTube, for example. It’s
owned by the biggest search engine on the net, Google. YouTube itself has become the second most used search engine, handling more searches per month than Yahoo!, AOL and Bing combined. Terefore, it’s more important than ever for businesses to have compelling video content uploaded to YouTube as an aid to being discovered by new customers. “Glasgow Chamber now has a
workshop that’ll teach you how to use your iPad or iPhone to make those compelling videos that you can use on YouTube and share across your other social networking channels. “Equally, understanding what
visitors to our website expect from us, and what we expect them to do, is very important. To that end, there’s a new workshop that will give you the time and space to clearly identify whether your web presence is managing your customer’s expectations, recognising that a customer will give us roughly five seconds of their time once they click onto our site, before they “bounce” off somewhere else. We’ll also focus on the importance of being proactive, spending time interacting with
potential customers on social networks such as Google+ and signposting them back to our website. Again, great content from us plays a vital part. “We reckon this is the year
where smart businesses will take a fresh look at their social networking endeavours, and recognise the importance of great, compelling content, not resting on their laurels just because they have a Facebook page, but rather leveraging these sites to get new business.” Check out our website www.
