Seize all the opportunities of this summer

We are now close to the Commonwealth Games 2014, the biggest event that Glasgow has ever witnessed. Plans for the event are well advanced and are falling step by step into place. In this issue we cover some

of the detail of the Games and of businesses’ relationship to the Games, both in how the operation of our businesses will be affected and the opportunities that they present. One of the key planks of our

strategy in dealing with that will be through The President’s Club, which was launched back in December with a very positive first meeting. We are now building

the President’s Club as the leading forum of senior representatives of the business community in Glasgow. President’s Club members, who will be drawn from the Chamber membership, will be the Glasgow economic ambassador ‘home team’. The focus at first will be to build up the membership to more than 250 members. Connie Young, appointed as the Co-ordinator of the President’s Club, is doing an excellent job in achieving that. We already have many key

players including Sir Tom Hunter, Jim McColl, Keith Cochrane and (Lord) Willie Haughey among others. We started the President’s Club

programme in June. The first event focused on the work of the Glasgow Economic Leadership Board and was led by Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Chair of the Economic Leadership Board and Principal of the University of Strathclyde. In order for it to champion

Glasgow we want the President’s Club to have full sight of what the city’s economic strategy is. In the months ahead, we will be sharing the latest data with the Club so that Club members get a really good grasp of what Glasgow has to offer.

It will also be a good opportunity

for Club members to take part in the discussion and to give their input to further refine the Glasgow Economic Leadership’s approach and work. Allied to the work of the ‘Home

Team’ will be that of the ‘Away Team’ – prominent business figures who have the interests of Glasgow and Scotland at heart drawn from the Global Scot network who are currently doing business overseas. We will

be keeping you informed throughout July about what is happening in the city and about

opportunities that your businesses might exploit. Connie Young will be the

first point of contact about any matters connected with the President’s Club. She and I will be delighted to hear any ideas about the future development of the President’s Club. It is interesting to note that

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, says that 12 years on from hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games they are still seeing legacy benefits for the city economy. For Manchester it resulted in an additional 300,000 visitors a year after the Games and a resurgence in confidence in Manchester’s future. For Glasgow we want at least

the same.
