»Plans are in motion to give train station a £104 million upgrade
Q
ueen Street Station, Scotland’s third busiest rail station, is to be upgraded with a
dramatic new look. Network Rail is consulting the
public on the £104 million redevelopment plan that will upgrade passenger facilities at the station.
Marketing Campaign spreads the word on what Sauchiehall Street offers
A campaign is being launched to raise the profile of Sauchiehall Street, traditionally Scotland’s most famous street, in the run up to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The profile-raising campaign is the first action decided on by the Sauchiehall Street Business
Improvement Steering Committee guiding the implementation of a five- year strategy for the area. The campaign will aim
to ensure that visitors to the city have access to the vibrant entertainment district while making improvements to the overall look and feel of the
entertainment zone. The committee is
chaired by Brian Fulton, Director of Hold Fast, the company that owns the Garage nightclub and includes Jane Laiolo, Group Manager for City Centre Regeneration; Tom Rice, Head of Marketing Communications for the
Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, as well as representatives from entertainment venues including Campus, The Variety Bar and NY Slice. Stuart Patrick, Chief
Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “Sauchiehall Street is one of Scotland’s most iconic
streets, so it is important that visitors to the city see and experience it at its finest. It has an incredible offering and with the wealth of experience held by the board in charge of the Business Improvement District, we are effectively steering the long-term direction of the street.”
Te east side of the building
will extend to Buchanan Galleries, with new passenger facilities over two levels. Te entrance and hotel extension above will be replaced with a modern glass frontage. Construction work will start
later this year and should be finished by 2019. David Dickson, Network Rail’s
Acting Route Managing Director for Scotland, added: “We want to hear what passengers think of this exciting new vision for the future Queen Street – a vision of a station which beter serves passengers and Glasgow and creates a landmark development in this iconic location. “Te new-look Queen Street
will greatly enhance the city centre and we want the public to help inform the final design of a station that will serve their needs for years to come.” Te first part of the public
consultation ran until the end of May with a second part running between September and December.
