It’s a flying start to the year for JCI Glasgow Plan in place to boost

science skills across Scotland 14

Junior Chamber It has been a busy start to the year for JCI Glasgow, with training events, social evenings and networking opportunities. The main event for the first quarter was hosting the JCI Scotland National Conference here in Glasgow. This was a great chance for our members to gain experience in running a larger project and a great chance to showcase another part of Glasgow to other members from JCI around the world. From 4-6 April young people

from all around Scotland (and the UK and Europe) travelled to Glasgow’s West End for a weekend of great training and, of course, networking and celebrations. We even had one member fly in from Iraq. With the debating and public speaking competitions, there was

the Games but the legacy behind the Games and what we can do into the future for our communities not just in Glasgow but in Scotland in general. The highlight of the weekend

Members of the JCI Glasgow Conference team and the JCI Scotland National President: Maggie Georgopoulos; Tom Widdows; Neil Jordan, JCI Glasgow Chairman; Lesley Fowler, JCI Scotland National President; Scott Johnston and Nadeem Sarwar

a great showcase of the expertise that JCI teaches it members. An extra bonus in the debating was seeing some of our past “greats” in Scott Johnston, Ewan Mackie and David Edmunds, go up against some of our younger members. This was a great showcase of how a debate should be done, and at times maybe shouldn’t. The participants were also

shown a new way of looking at how

they react and deal with change with a novel training session with Ian Thompson, from Never Mind the Buzzwords, which had some of our members planning raids and others balloon rides. It was a great insight into how people would cope with organisational change. Keynote speaker, Paul Zealy, who is the Head of Engagement for Glasgow 2014, spoke about not just

was the Awards Dinner. It was a great evening of banter and fun, which was made even better by the fact that JCI Glasgow took away two awards: Most Outstanding Member – Tom Widdows and Most Outstanding Programme for our work with the local charity With Kids. JCI Glasgow will now be taking

both of these awards to the European Conference in Malta, where we will be competing against other chapters from all around Europe for the awards. For more information on JCI
