Glasgow Business . 35 www.glasgowchamberofcommerce.com LEARN WITH GLASGOW CHAMBER

Across the UK, Chambers of Commerce have a well established reputation for providing extensive training across all businesses. Things are no different in Glasgow. Elaine Rodger, Head of Training and

Development, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “We work with several member companies to provide training. That enables us to put on courses covering everything from personal and business development to management leadership skills.” She cited the example of the Chamber’s

‘How To’ workshops. Presented by members themselves, these are extremely popular. “We have such a diverse range of expertise within the Chamber it makes sense to deliver that knowledge more widely,” said Elaine. The workshops are delivered at a business- friendly time between 8am–10am and 5pm–7pm. They cover topics such networking, selling successfully, getting your name in the media, and making the most of social media. They also include hints, tips and techniques people can put into practice quickly. The Chamber’s Focus workshops are half day sessions that take the basic content from a ‘How to’ and go into it in more depth. Typically, there are three ‘How To’ workshops and three Focus workshops each month in Glasgow. With a high percentage of members involved

in exporting and importing, any know-how in this area that can be passed on is often welcomed. Accordingly, there is also a monthly suite of international trade training programmes. Since business is ever-changing, the Chamber

keeps an eye on evolving demands. “We seek the views of those who attend our courses, asking them for their feedback on the training they’ve received and any other areas of interest. We also

monitor the skill surveys carried out by Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Skills Development Scotland,” added Elaine. The Chamber also tries to direct businesses to

sources of funding. Skills Development Scotland operates a ‘flexible training opportunity’ which can offer smaller businesses funds to support their training efforts. In addition, local authorities often have funding options available.
