Crucial flight check
In late February, we had a meeting with Nicola Sturgeon, the Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, to discuss Glasgow Chamber’s concerns about the taking of Prestwick Airport into public ownership. We were seeking answers to key questions about the implications of Scottish Government’s ownership of Prestwick Airport for the strategic position of Glasgow International Airport and its wider import to the economy of the city. Specifically, we sought
reassurance that the Scottish Government’s interest in Prestwick will not lead to decisions that have a damaging effect on Glasgow Airport, a Chamber member. We asked what impact the
Prestwick acquisition would have on air route marketing support for Glasgow, how the move would affect plans for improving surface access to Glasgow Airport, and what impact the move would have on Glasgow Airport’s ability to share
commercially confidential information with Scottish Government officials? And we asked, above all, what is the Scottish
Government’s policy on aviation strategy? These are issues that are vital to the economic
environment in which all our businesses operate within the West of Scotland. It is not just about route development – about where are the next routes that can be targeted for Scottish airports – but also about the broad sweep of policy. Where does the Scottish Government see aviation going? We asked what the Government’s view is on the role of the airports in satisfying industrial demand? And we asked about the economic development implications of developing airports in line with
that strategy? We were encouraged by the
openness of the Deputy First Minister during the discussions. It was a cordial and genuinely engaging meeting. We share a

common interest in the long-term future of the city of Glasgow. We understand that the Scottish Government
has employed consultants to advise it on commercial options for the development of Prestwick Airport. We have been promised a further meeting between the Deputy First Minister and the Chamber’s Council of Directors to explore the implications for Glasgow once the consultant’s report has been produced and discussed. We were promised a guidance note on the
Government’s aviation strategy and greater involvement in the Scottish effort to secure new air routes and look forward to seeing the material come our way. We hope we will be able to develop a healthy
expansion of routes at Glasgow Airport. We also look forward to a solution to the issue of surface access – hopefully with action being taken as soon as possible. It has emerged that the current appraisal report – in which Transport Scotland is involved – favours a train/tram option, a position that has been welcomed by Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown. If this option does indeed have the support of all partners, we need to see swift action on delivery. The congestion on the M8 is a growing issue and rail access to the airport, in whatever form, can be part of the solution. All in all, it was a positive meeting and a step
forward but we still have questions that need to be answered.
