Businesses are responsible for ensuring employees have suitable first-aid training

»Change means firms can choose their health and safety training providers
lasgow Chamber has worked with Stewart First Aid Training for the last eight years to
provide a full range of training and we are working with them to ensure that our members are fully informed of the recent changes in the provision of first aid training. In October 2013, the Health
and Safety Executive (HSE) withdrew from approving First Aid at Work training providers and qualifications. Andy McGrory, HSE’s policy
leader for first aid, stated: “HSE no longer approves first aid training and qualifications. Removing the HSE approval process will give businesses greater flexibility to choose their own training
providers and first aid training that is right for their workplace.” However, the HSE will
continue to set the standards for first aid training. While the changes give employers flexibility, the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work and three-day First Aid at Work courses designed by the HSE remain the building blocks for first aid training and further information on this can be found at
www.hse.gov.uk Stewart First Aid Training,
who are specialists in workplace first aid training, have commented that there is still some confusion surrounding the changes made by the HSE in October last year. Joanna Dunbar, Managing
Director, commented: “We feel
that employers enjoyed and benefited from the security of having the HSE register of training providers. Tis gave employers assurances in terms of training standards and it is disappointing that this no longer exists. We are pleased however that there is more emphasis in geting training suited to individual workplace risks.” Employers do have to be
vigilant in securing the best first aid training possible and should ensure that their selected training company meets quality standards as recommended by the HSE, or falls under the supervision of monitoring bodies, such as the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB) or SQA etc, who oversee training company standards on the
employer’s behalf. Tis can be found in the HSE’s publication GEIS3. Stewart First Aid Training is approved by the SQA, FAIB and ITC First Aid. For further information on this
topic or to book first aid training through Glasgow Chamber, please contact Elaine Rodger on 0141 204 8332 or email
