12 . Glasgow Business March/April 2014
A
ggreko, the global leader in temporary power and a Glasgow Chamber Platinum
Partner, is going to play a key role in Scotland’s summer of sport. An Official Supporter of the
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the company will provide temporary power across the event’s 13 sporting venues and the Athletes’ Village. Aggreko is a key supplier
to the global events industry, providing temporary power and temperature control, be that heating or cooling, to many of the world’s major sporting and cultural affairs. In addition to Glasgow 2014,
Aggreko has been selected as the Official Temporary Power Generator for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and, in January, the company supported its 24th edition of the Superbowl, providing both power and heating to the biggest event on the North American sporting calendar. While its work in major events
is easily Aggreko’s most high- profile area of business, it only accounts for about 8 per cent of the company’s global revenue. Aggreko has an incredibly wide scope of business and is active across both developed and emerging markets, supplying to small businesses at one end and national utilities, global mining houses and major energy companies at the other. Closer to home, Aggreko
services a wide and varied customer base. A big part of its business in developed markets is in the provision of contingency planning in the event that customers experience disruptions to their power supplies. Chris Harvey, Aggreko’s
General Manager for Scotland and Ireland, said: “We have contingency plans in place for many industries, universities and hospitals across the UK to provide them with temporary power as and when the need arises.” While Aggreko is primarily a

temporary power provider, it also provides baseload power plants to long-standing customers, such as the 12 MW it recently supplied to an oil platform fabrication and refurbishment yard in the Cromarty Firth. Chris said he is delighted that
Aggreko has become a Platinum Partner of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. “Linking with business leaders
is very important for us as a Scotish organisation so we are delighted to be playing our part in Glasgow Chamber in what is such an important year for Glasgow
and Scotland,” he said. Chris, who was appointed as General Manager for Scotland and Ireland in May of last year, has enjoyed an extensive career that has seen him in a succession of engineering, operational and commercial management roles in Scotland. He leads an operation the scale
of which means that many of the major events in Scotland – and many smaller ones – will feature generators on site bearing the orange branding of Aggreko. However, working with such high-profile events is only one
facet of Aggreko’s growing business in Scotland. Chris said: “We see a
significant increase in business on the back of a booming energy sector in Scotland. Te sector is in a very exciting phase, and there is major growth in building infrastructure for renewables.” Aggreko supports all industry
sectors in Scotland, including very strong ties with the oil and gas, utilities and renewables sectors, providing power plants and temperature/moisture control equipment for offshore and onshore applications.
