Homes & Gardens  Home security

With winter well upon us, you may be leaving your home in darkness in the morning and returning again in the dark in the evening.

When leaving your home empty for long periods please take a moment to ask: “who protects your home, family, posessions and you?” When you watch a Crimewatch programme it can be scary to see victims of crime who are living in the same type of house as you. They are not celebrities or multi millionaires. Do you ever think: “It can happen to me?”

A simple audible-only burglar alarm is an effective deterrent and will warn intruders, neighbours and the family, if at home or remotely by phone, if there is an intrusion.

Technology today includes wireless equipment and pet-friendly movement sensors. Different setting methods to control systems include pin number, tag or radio fob (like locking/unlocking a car).

Your personal security can be

improved by using personal attack (panic) buttons that are live 24/7 and operational in and around the house.

CCTV cameras connected to a digital video recorder (like a Sky Plus box with recording directly to a hard drive) enable you to see live images or turn back time to see what happended when you were not looking. If connected via your broadband router, most can be accessed remotely from a mobile phone. This allows you to view your home, elderly relatives, pets, vintage cars or other things you value, from anywhere in the world.

In adddition to the above technologies

we can all help ourselves and neighbours by taking basic steps to improve security by locking windows and doors, ensuring UPVC doors have handles lifted up (to engage bolts), then lock the handles with a key.

You should also remove climbing aids such as bins, ladders, sheds etc away from first-floor windows.

You should use time clocks to switch on lights when you are out (or use photocells to switch lights on at dusk).

Make sure you cancel papers when away and tell your neigbours if you are going away to keep an eye out for you, and check the post is not hanging out of your letterbox.

Do not leave items of value on display such as car keys, laptops, handbags or purses where they can be lifted easily by an intruder.

Look at your home as if you were going to break in. Make it harder for the criminals and try to add layers to build up your security gates, fences, lighting, locks, safes, burglar alarms, CCTV etc as they all work together.
