In and around West Malling

Surrounded by orchards in Kent's Garden of England, the bustling market town of West Malling is a vibrant mix of old fashioned charm and contemporary attractions.

Situated just off the A20, the town is steeped in history with quaint streets and lovely old buildings. But it has also kept pace with progress, proving a perfect birthplace for a variety of new ventures. In and around West Malling you will find a huge choice of traditional pubs, trendy bistros and tempting tea rooms. For shopaholics, the town offers a wide range of independent shops and boutiques and a monthly farmers' market.

Magical Mystery Tour The story of the town is equally varied with links to the Dambusters and Dickens, and West Malling has even provided the backdrop for a Beatles movie. In 1967, The Fab Four filmed around

the town and nearby RAF airfield, now the upmarket Kings Hill development, for the Magical Mystery Tour. Among the many locals who were extras in the musical was Tim Baldock, who runs the Moor and Mountain ski store in the High Street, and remembers Ringo Starr buying jeans and a pink shirt - all for £1.65.

Streets ahead The broad High Street is the hub of West Malling and the ideal place to start your magical mystery tour. There is a continental feel, especially on warner days, with drinks and meals being served at pavement tables outside several of the pubs, restaurants and cafes. The ever-changing Abbey Arcade is a seedbed for new firms, several of which have moved on to new premises in the town. Dating back to the 1550s, the Mill Yard Craft Centre also houses specialist shops as well as a pretty tea room. The town is a great place to browse for something that little bit special from

Family Fun Make a bee-line to neighbouring Leybourne Lakes Country Park where there are walks, wildlife and windsurfing. You can take part in ranger-led activities or dive, sail or canoe. Enjoy the fresh air with a ramble around 20-acre Macey's Meadow near the centre of the town. This former orchard next to the Old County Cricket Ground is lovingly maintained by volunteers as a wildlife haven.
