Mind, Body & Soul Taking one step at a time
Being overweight increases the risk of developing health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, joint problems and type two diabetes. However, many of these problems are reversible with weight loss. Also, recent research has shown that losing just 5-10% of your body weight and keeping it off can start to bring many health benefits.
Losing just 10% of your weight, and keeping it off, can:
1 Reduce blood pressure It can also lower the need for blood pressure medication or even mean that you no longer need to take any at all.
2 Reduce risk of developing diabetes Weight loss can improve control of diabetes by helping lower blood glucose levels and improving insulin sensitivity. It can also reduce the need for medication.
3 Improve blood cholesterol levels At a new lower weight your levels of HDL cholesterol – the type of cholesterol that helps protect against heart disease – are also likely to increase.
4 Help relieve back and joint pain Losing weight can also reduce the risk of developing osteoarthritis.
5 Improve respiratory problems It can help your lungs function better and reduce the frequency of, or even cure, sleep apnoea where people repeatedly stop breathing in their sleep.
6 Improve mood and self-esteem You will feel in control, calm and motivated to continue on your weight loss journey.
7 Help improve asthma Losing weight can help reduce symptoms and the need for medication.
8 Increase mobility You may find you can walk further or up the stairs without getting breathless.
9 Improve fertility Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome may gain improvements in the functioning of their ovaries. Women who have menstrual problems may find their menstrual function returns to normal and periods stabilise.
10 Reduce the risk of certain cancers It can reduce the incidents of obesity- related cancers such as cancers of the breast, uterus, cervix, ovaries and gall bladder.
Editorial by Slimming World Guidelines for a healthy diet
The Department of Health and NHS Choices recommend eight tips for healthy eating. The basic guidelines are:
1 Base your meals on starchy foods
2 Eat lots of fruit and vegetables
3 Eat more fish
4 Cut down on saturated fat & sugar
5 Try to eat less salt – no more than 6g a day
6 Get active and try to be a healthy weight
7 Drink plenty of water if you drink alcohol, drink sensibly
8 Don't skip breakfast as a means of losing weight
The perfect diet There is no such thing as a perfect diet; a good diet is eating a little of everything and not too much of anything. This means that you really can eat a portion of chips occasionally if you are trying to lose weight. You don’t have to give up any food completely.
