Build your own Gingerbread House
The Gingerbread House became popular in Germany around the time Hansel and Gretel was written by the Grimm Brothers. Icing served as snow on the roofs of elaborate edible houses decorated with sweets in bakery windows. This year, why not make this magical addition to the Christmas table yourself? It’s simple and it’s fun. Follow our guide below and get the kids involved to create a wonderfully unique and delicious Christmas treat.
once removed.)
7. Cool for a couple of minutes then use a sharp knife to cut back to pre-baked template size (Tip - When trimming your house after baking, use a warm knife) then leave to completely cool.
8. Follow royal icing recipe, then with a small piping bag or spoon use the icing to stick the four walls together on your base. Leave to set. (Tip - If needed, use bowls or any other supports to help hold up the walls whilst they are drying.)
9. When walls are fixed, add the roof and leave to set.
10. Decorate with sweets, biscuit shapes, lollies, sprinkles, or whatever else you fancy. (Tip - Tweezers and cocktail sticks are useful tools for positioning sweets). Let your imagination
run wild, and if you have decoration to spare you could add a garden.
11. Keep your decorated house in a cool, dry place before devouring!
Alternatively, you can go Christmas shopping whilst your children make a gingerbread house of their own At Sarah’s House.
