Where New York chic hits the streets of Ryde

Maddison Avenue

For Marc Jenkins, owner of Maddison Avenue - the newest hairdressers on the block, this fabulously chic and stylish new salon is the dream he has envisaged since he was a 17 year old hairdresser apprentice training in New York. “This is the fourth salon I’ve owned, the previous three were in London, but this is the first one that I can truly say is everything I ever wanted it to be, explains Marc. Maddison Avenue has actually been trading for 3 years in a much smaller, off Union Street position, gradually building a 300 strong client base. Coming to Union Street has now given the salon main street visibility and the chance to expand. “The décor is inspired by the classic converted loft apartments of Manhattan and created by hand, by me from the basement up. Not just by me, with Sarah, my partner at home and work. We have poured everything into creating a space which we know our customers will enjoy; and feel comfortable and at home in.” The attention to detail is evident in everything from the quality of the building materials used throughout, contrasting bare Victorian brickwork with solid wood flooring and contemporary metal fittings; to the coffee cups – with saucers the perfect size to hold Sarah’s home-made cupcakes. “We wanted to create an environment that customers feel relaxed and confident in,” explains Marc. “We understand that for our customers, the experience of coming here is almost as important as how their hair or nails actually look when they leave. And I’m proud to say we’ve done that. Our customers appreciate the quality of the filter coffee, the range of drinks available,

the home-made cakes, the comfortable sofa in reception and the friendly welcome. Plus they can get their nails done!” So what’s next for Maddison Avenue? “Well, we’re opening a cutting school very soon. Using a uniquely formulated technique which allows us to teach complete novices to cut hair in a very short space of time. Also catering for those already in the trade, all ages, whether brushing up on their craft after a long absence or learning new skills and techniques, this is definitely an exciting project for Island people…so watch this space!”
