Businesses to help pupils


Glasgow Chamber of Commerce has launched a plan that aims to establish partnerships between businesses and every secondary school in the city. A fi ve-year vision for the


programme, being organised by Glasgow Chamber’s Youth Employment Action Group and Glasgow City Council’s Education Services, was set out at a conference in October. The programme will seek to


increase employment among school leavers by establishing a network of business support partners working with schools. Ultimately, the plan is to


provide employability and sector-skills based learning within the school curriculum from primary to post-school. The aim is also to create


many opportunities for specialist learning in the key years of secondary four to secondary six. The new approach will also


better co-ordinate partnership approaches to the four sectors which currently employ the majority of Glasgow’s 16-19 year olds – hotels, restaurants and events; wholesale and retail; community, social and personal services; and construction. The Youth Employment


Action Group was set up to analyse the cause, implications and potential solutions to the unemployment among young people aged 16-24. More than 250 employers


are directly involved, including ScottishPower, Scottish Water, Marriott, the Weir Group, GTG Training and Network Rail. Alison McRae, Projects


Director at Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “By working closely with the business community, schools can educate pupils about job options as well as actually off ering placements or even full-time roles. “A number of businesses are


already actively involved in this area, but we intend to increase the number of partnerships.”

usinesses in Sauchiehall Street are being balloted about a plan to make the famous Glasgow street


a London West End style entertainment draw. A planned Business


Improvement District (BID) will focus on the non-pedestrianised section from the junction with Rose Street and Blythswood Street to the junction with Charing Cross. T e plan is to increase the


number of visitors substantially through increased marketing and ensuring a clean, safe and highly inviting environment for visitors. Glasgow Chamber of


Commerce has been working closely with a group of businesses that have frontages on the street to develop the proposal – aimed at supporting, championing and improving the large number of


entertainment premises operating on that part of Sauchiehall Street. T e off ering will include


bars and restaurants, nightclubs, casinos, takeaway food outlets, cafes, exhibitions and entertainment venues. A proposal and business plan A


Business Improvement District for the Entertainment Sector has been produced, and voting papers have been sent out to all eligible businesses. A ballot will be held in December with a result announced on Friday 13 December. If there were a turnout of 25 per


cent or more and a majority vote in favour, all entertainment businesses would pay 1 per cent of their rateable value into a special fund. T e companies would raise more than £180,000 in fi ve years with more expected to be contributed by the public sector and other organisations.


Brian Fulton, Director of CPL Entertainment, which owns T e Garage, said: “Every big and successful city in the world has streets which are synonymous with entertainment and that is what we want Sauchiehall Street to become.” Glasgow Chamber of


Commerce Chief Executive Stuart Patrick said: “T is section of Sauchiehall Street has gone through a signifi cant change over the years and is no longer really a shopping area, but very much a leisure area. T e BID process would turn it from what can be seen as unloved into an area that is given a greater degree of at ention. T is would be the fi rst Business Improvement District in Glasgow and could become a catalyst for others.” If successful, the proposed start of the BID would be April 2014.
