Economy Party conference boost

Glasgow hosted the UK Liberal Democrat Conference recently, which gave a boost to the city economy believed to be worth around £7 million. The first UK party conference

to be hosted in the city for many years also put the UK media spotlight firmly on Glasgow for the duration of the conference. The event was attended

by thousands of delegates and influential political figures in addition to the media attention. It was a step forward for the city on the political party conference circuit, having previously hosted the Labour Party’s spring conferences in 2003 and 2007 and the Scottish National Party’s spring conference in 2012. There was a double boost for

Glasgow’s economy when it was announced that the UK Liberal

Democrat conference would return to the city in 2014. The 2014 event will begin on

Saturday 4 October – a timetable chosen not to clash with campaigning in the independence referendum, something that would have happened if the party had gone ahead with its original plan to hold the event in Liverpool from 13-17 September. Scott Taylor, Chief Executive

of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, welcomed the news that the conference will return next year. He said: “The return in 2014

further strengthens Glasgow’s reputation for delivering major national and international events and is a clear endorsement of the confidence that the meetings industry has in our city.” Glasgow Chamber held a breakfast event considering the progress of

automatic enrolment into company pension schemes one year on from its introduction, supported by Standard Life, as part of the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in Glasgow. Speakers included (pictured

for Pensions; Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce; David Nish, Chief Executive, Standard Life; and Varry McMenemy, Managing Director, Bellcom Worldwide Ltd and President of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.

University climbs the world rankings

Recognition The University of Glasgow has achieved a double success in the university rankings tables. First, it attained its highest

world ranking, moving from 54th to 51st, in the latest QS survey released in September. It also rose 22 places in the latest Times Higher Education World Rankings. Professor Anton Muscatelli,

Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University, said: “I am delighted that our progress in these rankings has continued. “Over recent months we have

recruited some of the brightest academic and research talents from across the globe, confirming Glasgow’s reputation as one of the world’s great broad-based, research intensive universities.”

ADVERTORIAL LEADER IN TRAINING

In a straitened economic environment, businesses are, more than ever, dependent on gaining commercial benefit and maximising competitiveness. When the botom line is

critical, why should an organisation invest in training? How does a shrinking budget affect a company’s ability to train its staff? Although training is viewed

by some as a luxury, it can drive performance and efficiency, and help maintain competitiveness in a fast-changing world. City of Glasgow College has

positioned itself as a leader in training and development and delivers the widest range of professional training of any college in Scotland. Roy Gardner, Business &

The University of Glasgow is 51st in the latest QS survey of world university rankings and rose 22 places in the Times Higher Education World Rankings

International Development Director at City of Glasgow College, an institution whose academic schools work with 18

professional bodies, believes that flexibility and long-term value is key to ensuring training remains high on an organisation’s agenda. “We’re vocationally based,

industry facing, and we understand that things change rapidly in business. We are able to adapt accordingly. “Training is a great way to

motivate staff, through job enrichment and satisfaction, as well as promoting continuous professional development that can open doors to career progression.” A number of funding

initiatives are available and training providers are oſten able to advise on subsidies that are available to businesses.
