JCI Glasgow New haunt is big success

The Annual JCI Scotland Leadership Academy was moved to what could now be its permanent base at ‘The Burn’ in Leask, just outside of Brechin, with Glasgow represented by Tom, Nasser, Jenn and Marcus. Our former Chair Maggie even flew all the way from her current home in Kazakhstan to co-host the event with Deputy National President Lesley. The venue was straight out of an

Agatha Christie novel, and certainly complemented the fairly intense game of Cluedo that kicked off the Saturday night. It was a slightly more relaxed affair compared to the Gothenburg Academy, but the training encouraged (and in some cases forced) all the members to think on their feet about themselves, their careers and, of course, their current involvement in the JCI Scotland chapters.

There were lots of presentations, public speaking, skills and strengths analysis and an afternoon in the hotel grounds, skipping our way through minefields and negotiating giant spiders webs and, for two lucky delegates, the chance to literally herd the rest of us like sheep. It was fantastic to have three of our newest Glasgow members graduate from the academy and, going by the imagination and drive they demonstrated over the weekend, we are very excited to have them on our team. A special mention to our National

President, Steven, for being such a good sport in putting up with some gentle ‘ribbing’ to borderline slander in the ‘Stand & Deliver’ competition on Saturday night, especially during Tom’s winning speech. We are fairly sure it won’t be long before he gets his chance for revenge!

John Watson and Company has been sold to the Multi-Color Corporation of America in a multi-million pound deal. The Ohio-based multi-national has purchased

the world-beating Glasgow printing business chaired by John Watson OBE, the fifth generation of the dynasty which can trace its roots in printing back to 1824. The current Chairman, John Watson, has been

with the company for 48 years and began work under the direction of his father in the company’s stationery shop in St Vincent Place before the business began its growth as a commercial label printer by moving to premises in Kyle Street, Port Dundas. John is retiring from the business. Watson’s is a world-class business of which

Scotland can be rightly proud. To be still in business almost two centuries after it was founded is nothing short of remarkable and testament to the care and attention the business has received from the Watson family and its board. Nigel Vinecombe, CEO of Multi-Color

Corporation, said: “We have always admired John Watson and Company and its world-class

excellence particularly its expertise in delivering the finest quality labels for the global drinks industry and the Scotch whisky industry in particular.” John Watson said: “We are delighted to have

concluded this deal with Multi-Color Corporation which will see Glasgow and Scotland continue as a centre of global excellence in label printing and packaging.

“The highly skilled and dedicated 80-strong

workforce are one of the great strengths of the John Watson team. This deal is undoubtedly the way forward for the business.” Multi-Color Corporation turns over in excess

of £720 million worth of US dollars over 28 global locations. It will retain the existing John Watson workforce and plant in Kyle Street, Glasgow and there will be no redundancies. After the deal concluded John Watson paid

tribute to his team of advisers, praising their professionalism. They are principal legal advisers Shepherd

business advisers Morrison Watson with additional support from Wylie & Bisset. Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP’s Corporate

Finance Partner George Boyle, based in its Glasgow office, who led the firm’s team in advising shareholders and management since first approached early in 2012, said: “We were delighted to be able to work with John and the shareholders to help bring this complex deal to a close by providing strategic advice on corporate, tax, property and employment-related matters.”
