In October, Glasgow Chamber got together with Glasgow City Council’s Education Department to look at how to bring business and schools together and develop long-term partnerships between them. As we outline in this issue, we

hope that such partnerships will improve understanding of what skills businesses are looking for and improve the employability of school leavers and ultimately help them get jobs. The initiative came about at the urging of the Glasgow Economic Leadership, who saw it as a key aim to develop closer links and help tackle youth unemployment. We hope, as a Chamber, that businesses will heed the call to become involved in schools in their local community within the city or the wider city region. We already

have good examples of schools and businesses working together. For example, as we heard at the launch, Lourdes Secondary in Cardonald already works with Glasgow Chamber members Arnold Clark and Jurys Inn. Our aim is to ensure that every single school in Glasgow is able to make links with business to give their students a better understanding of what is involved in working in business and of the range of roles that are available. It will aim to put employability and sector skills at the heart of the school curriculum, giving students the best possible opportunity for fi nding future employment. We know that there is a large

appetite for this and we hope every member business that can will consider the possibility and act on it. Any member interested in fi nding

more about Schools and Business Partnerships should contact Leona Seaton at Glasgow Chamber. As it is our last issue of Glasgow

Business for the year, it is worth recalling the range and quality of events we have hosted at Glasgow Chamber this year. It has been another stellar

programme of Glasgow Talks with a range of speakers that has included Lord Smith of Kelvin, Sir Willie – now Lord – Haughey, Keith Cochrane, Shonaig MacPherson, Professor Anton Muscatelli and Martin Wolf and Colin Mathews. As we cover in detail in this issue,

we held our fi rst Inspiring City Awards, in conjunction with The Herald, which featured the contribution of many businesses, other organisations and individuals and, of course, an inspiring speech from Sir Tom Hunter that many regard as one of the highlights of the year. We also hosted our Glasgow Business Awards, marking the remarkable achievements of so many city businesses and business leaders in challenging

economic times. It has also been a year in

which Your Chamber has extended its activities in the key area of exports and overseas trading links. We held our fi rst Infl uencers’ Dinner abroad in Dusseldorf in conjunction with our sister Chamber there. We also held our fi rst major,

day-long international trade event in August, something which we hope will grow and become a regular part of Glasgow Chamber’s annual calendar. We have also played our part, as

we shall continue to do, in helping prepare businesses for doing business and making the most of the opportunities presented by the Commonwealth Games. It has been an event-fi lled year

with many highlights and, of course, we have 2014 – which is being dubbed the year of Glasgow – to look forward to. I wish you well as you prepare for 2014 and all it will bring.
