WORLD CLASS Get support to successfully export

A

s the world becomes more connected and trade more open, lucrative

opportunities exist in overseas markets for Scot ish businesses. Indeed, recent fi gures show that more and more Scot ish companies are trading globally, with exports from Scotland increasing to just under £24 billion in 2011, a rise of £1.6 billion from 2010. International trade brings a

range of benefi ts to companies, from increased competitiveness

and access to new and niche markets, to a more diversifi ed customer base. However, research suggests that some companies oſt en over-estimate the risk of exporting and under-estimate the benefi ts. While the prospect of exporting can be daunting, companies do not have to embark on their international trade journey alone. Scot ish Development

International (SDI), the international arm of Scot ish Enterprise, is on hand to help companies develop their

international business. Last year, SDI supported more than 2,000 companies into new overseas markets, providing a range of support services including free Smart Exporter training, in-market support, international strategy development and an extensive programme of trade missions. With ongoing economic

challenges, it’s vital that more and more Scot ish companies embrace a global mindset and view international trading as an integral part of their strategy, helping to

promote both business growth and economic recovery. With Scotland’s products and

services in high demand across the globe, the opportunities are there for the taking.

CASE STUDY: COMPANY IS A HIT IN US

Rage Music is one company that has made the move into overseas markets with the support of SDI. Caroline Gorman, Head of Music, talks about the business’ journey into the US market. “T e US is the natural home of

the three main sectors that Rage Music’s international trade lies in – large-scale advertising campaigns, soundtracks for feature fi lms and soundtracks for video games. “Taking our business

international, with the opening of our studio in LA, initially grew from the fi lm and advertising work we were doing. Aſt er scoring TV advertising campaigns for a number of high-profi le clients such as Chase Manhat an Bank and Absolut, we went on to work on a number of major projects, including a multi-million dollar advertising campaign for Chevron, which consisted of a short fi lm being shown during the US Superbowl. “Due to the nature of our

business, a lot of new customers contacted us aſt er seeing or hearing about our work, so we saw a natural increase in the number of US-based clients. Since our

initial projects, we’ve had the opportunity to work on many more advertising campaigns, while our fi lm work has moved from the British/indie market to feature fi lms, working on titles such as Limitless, Legendary and Walking with Dinosaurs. T e international exposure has also given us the opportunity to branch out into other areas – namely the video game market and we have just begun work on a new project with EA Games. “Working in the US has its

challenges, such as long forms to be completed in triplicate (covering banking, fi nance, tax) and all sorts of exciting paperwork. Also, get ing to understand the workings of a new market is initially diffi cult – we are still learning, but get ing advice and ‘real world’ experience from people in the marketplace is always helpful.

“We’ve also received a great

deal of advice and support from SDI, which has been invaluable to us, from fi nancial support to, more importantly, advice and guidance on a number of our diff erent projects and plans. Having an account manager who understands your business and its challenges and is there to off er guidance and put you in contact with people who can help you to achieve your business goals, really is hugely benefi cial. “Our activity in the US

marketplace has brought real growth to our business over the past fi ve years. We’ve grown our client list and our own team, and this has enabled us to shape the company in order to deliver the range of music services that we now specialise in. “Our plan for the future is to

focus on our three main sectors and continue to push towards a bet er level of recognition within these areas.”
