Refurbishment

Mitchell Library begins a new chapter

A £3.4 million refurbishment of Glasgow’s iconic Mitchell Library got under way in mid-November. The 102-year-old building, one

of Europe’s largest public libraries, is set to benefi t from improved lighting throughout the building, along with a new fi re alarm system. A family history centre will also

be created within the library, study space will be improved, two public lifts will be upgraded and fl oors will be relocated and reorganised. Due to the extensive programme

of works, sections of the library require to be closed for several months. Levels four and fi ve were closed for refurbishment from Thursday 14 November, and will reopen in March 2014. The second phase of the works will then begin, with levels two and three of the library inaccessible until June 2014. Glasgow Life, which operates the

Mitchell Library and 32 other libraries throughout the city, scheduled the work to take place in two phases to minimise disruption and to ensure that the library could remain open to the public. The library hosts a Business at

the Mitchell strand, which off ers the opportunity to do market research and to search funding opportunities for small or growing businesses. Throughout the programme

of works, there will also be limited access to some of the library’s collections and only one of the public lifts will be in operation. While levels four and fi ve are closed, services previously accessed on these fl oors can be requested from the staff desk on levels two and three. Customers who know the

materials they require can request access to them in advance by calling 0141 287 2999.
