insurance risk without adequate insurance.

If competing abroad, choose the insurer carefully and ask the question before going on cover. Some policies have, as standard, cover to Europe for 30 days in one policy year. If you’re planning to compete abroad for longer periods or travel outside Europe, speak to the insurer who may, in some cases, be able to extend the policy.

Don’t overlook insurance when buying a new horse. A good, reliable insurance policy will give peace of mind should the health of the animal be compromised.

... Advice Line ... Q&A: Shearwater Insurance

Q - If I have to make a claim on my horse’s insurance, what sort of information will my insurance company require? I’ve heard that my vet would have to send a complete medical history, but I didn’t buy him until he was seven, so how would I get that information and how detailed does it have to be?

Kathy Tansey of Shearwater Insurance explains what you should expect if you have to make a claim.

A - When you need to make a claim on your horse insurance you will normally be asked to complete a claim form, which will usually ask for full details of the horse’s illness or injury. It will typically require such detail as the time the injury or illness was first noticed, when the vet first attended and what the initial diagnosis is. Some claim forms have a section to be completed by the vet, while others ask for a separate report to be provided. This should detail any diagnostic tests undertaken along with any treatment given and/or planned, along with a prognosis. This should be submitted with the original invoices for the veterinary attendance and treatment.

Unless the problem is an external injury with a clear cause, most companies will also request a Veterinary Treatment History. This should be easy to obtain from your Vet as most will just provide a printout from their computers. We would only expect the history provided to cover the period of time the horse had been in your ownership but if you have used more than one vet during the time you have owned the horse we would expect a history printout from each one.
