Two more HOYS tickets for international showjumper Simon Buckley
drawn third of them. The first two faulted and there but two good ones behind me, so although I was pleased with how he jumped, I wasn’t happy when I came out of the ring as I thought I’d left too much room. Sure enough the next to go knocked three seconds off the time without even trying, but the last to go made a mistake so we got the second of the two HOYS tickets. Job done!” It will be Simon’s third appearance in the
Wordsworth II after his success in the Foxhunter Regional qualified him and Simon Buckley for the Foxhunter Championship at the Horse of the Year Show
Adding prestigious qualifications for both the Newcomers and Foxhunter Championships at the Horse of the Year Show to an enviable tally of successes this season will see international showjumper Simon Buckley contest three HOYS Championships this year. Simon said; “There were eight first round clears, five went forward to the third round and I was
Foxhunter Championship, having qualified both Silvano and the stallion Jericho in recent years. The previous weekend, Simon was in action with the 6yo Darco gelding Delinquent JX he owns jointly with his mother Judith and secured a place in the Newcomers Championship. showjumpers win European team silver
Consistent performances across both rounds secured a well-deserved team silver for Britain’s Junior showjumpers at the European Jumping Championships in Vejer de la Frontera in Spain.
18 year-old Laura Robinson from North Yorkshire with the 14 year-old liver chestnut gelding, Cree Cruiser owned jointly by Neil Robinson and Geoffrey Robinson competed alongside Emma O’Dwyer aged 18 from Churchdown, Gloucestershire with Joanne O’Dwyer’s 10 year-old grey mare, Miss Tonic, Jake Saywell aged 16 from Newark, Nottinghamshire with Andrew Saywell’s 8 year-old bay gelding, Farinelli Van De Zeshoek and Jessica Mendoza aged 17 from Chippenham, Wiltshire with Spirit T, a 12 year-old brown mare owned by John Roberts.
Riding under the Team Fairfax banner, the Team competition sees four horse/ rider combinations compete over two rounds with three of the four best rounds counting, allowing one drop score. Finishing on a total score of 12 penalties as the result of three fences being lowered, Great Britain’s quartet finished just one fence behind Switzerland on 8 penalties and a jump ahead of the Dutch team on 16 penalties.
The European Championships invited a total of 47 nations across Europe to compete, with the British Team contesting the championships under the guidance of Chef d’Equipe and Team Coach Corinne Bracken. Talking after the awards ceremony Corinne commented “It was a nail biting class with no-one knowing the result until the very last horse in the competition jumped.
“The support that we’ve had at this Championship across parents, owners, grooms and family alike has definitely added to the success of the team. This has also been furthered by the representation of the World Class Showjumping Team who are elated at the result achieved. We are now all focused on hopefully delivering more positive news for Great Britain across the Young Rider and Children Teams both of whom will also be competing for Team Medals today.”
