tried ‘n’ tested Fyna-Lite – Pellet
Master Stable Fork The company says: The only professional stable tool designed specifically for use on pellet bedding systems. These are increasingly popular, necessitating the development of a new fork suitable for this type of bedding. It features very tightly spaced tines to allow the bedding to fall through, whilst still collecting the smallest pieces of debris. The tines are also rounded preventing damage to rubber matting flooring. Constructed from a strong, yet lightweight, high specification steel, the prongs are made from hardened and tempered spring steel wire. Available with three different handle materials - Wood, Fibreglass and Aluminium, and three grips - Softex, D-Grip and T-Grip. RRP: around £25.00

Our tester, Claire Paisley, says: Used for mucking out each day since it arrived. Very easy to use and lightweight. It is intended for use with wood pellet type beddings and the rounded tines would be really good to use with rubber matting as they would enable you to muck out without damaging your flooring. The handle has a d-grip and although the tines are rounded the fork does pick up muck without removing lots of bedding unnecessarily. Although not its primary purpose or bedding type, I also found it easy to shape a shavings bed using it. The fork seems to be versatile and will do its intended job. In other words, it picks up the muck, and therefore does its job!!
KBF99 – Shavings Fork
The company says: Not only makes light work of mucking out, but also helps to protect horses from harmful bacteria and fungus thanks to the unique KBF99 additive, which is effective for a minimum of two years. Tested at Coventry University, KBF99 effectively killed 99% of the bacteria/fungus test culture (Strangles, Ringworm and
E.coli). All products are chemical free, can dramatically reduce harmful bacteria and fungus in the stable environment when combined with good stable management and feature a best before date. Purple, Pink, Grey, Burgundy & Blue. RRP: around £19.99.
www.kbf99.co.uk Our tester, Peter Bulman, says: My first impression of this fork was one of dismay, - it looked and felt so fragile, like a lightweight mock-up of a ‘proper’ fork. Well whatever you think about first impressions this one was ‘way out’. The strong yet lightweight (alloy) shaft is of good length c/w with a (preferable) ‘D’ handle and the head (prongs) are of a lightweight (yet robust) gray ‘plastic’ composite. It is so light and maneuverable and, along with the superb design (shape) of the head, almost makes the job of tidying up the stable a pleasure (what?). The shape of the head, rounded and contoured – a cross between a spoon and a fork - along with its light weight and ‘D’ handle, makes it so much easier to sieve ‘foreign bodies’ from out of wood chip bedding in particular. I recall, some years ago, telling the MD of a wood chip bedding manufacturer that a head shape like this was needed for the fork that he was going to have produced. KBF99 have gone one (or more) better and produced a great fork that ‘lightens the load’ immensely. A superbly designed and constructed tool. How can one enthuse about a shavings fork?! - I think I will take it on holiday with me!!
Abbey England – Stubbs Horsey Ball
The company says: Simple and robust, this entertaining toy dispenses treats or feed to keep horses, or even dogs, amused for hours. There are no plugs, stoppers or removable parts, just one hole for easy filling. The lumpy style ball seems to have a mind of its own and does not go in a straight line! Moulded from ultra tough Stubbythene (which is tested for impact strength at icy temperatures) the Horsey Ball is made to last. Blue, Pink, Green, Purple and Red. RRP: around £15.99.
www.abbeyengland.com Our tester, Simon Buckley, says: I’m not a great believer in toys for horses but in some situations there is a role for them. I have a 3yr old colt who gets into a paddock for a couple of hours, but if we haven’t time to lunge him, he may be stabled for the rest of the day. This ‘ball’ is providing him with amusement for lengthy periods. He can roll it around, pick it up (it has protrusions on its sides), or with a few nuts added, just push it from side to side. The last ball he had was bigger and good for him to ‘chase’ in the indoor school but it didn’t live up to its ‘indestructible’ tag ! I think this one stands a better chance.
Horze – Lockable
Saddle Rack The company says: Keep your valuable saddle safe with this durable lockable saddle rack. Made of robust plastic coated steel, this saddle rack is designed to fit all saddles. Lock not included. Size: L 64cm / W 36cm / H 38cm. Black. RRP: around £23.99.
www.horze.co.uk
Our tester, Sue Chappelhow, says: – I mounted it on a solid wall in the tack room, thus enabling me to keep my saddle safer on a daily basis, when not in use. It is similar to a normal wall mounted Vinyl coated saddle rack, but has two parts folding together, thus holding your saddle securely between, whilst then using a padlock to lock them together. A must for every horse owner, as an anti-theft device, especially if the place where you keep your saddle is not securely locked all the time. Just dust or wipe clean when necessary.
