tried ‘n’ tested T.E.N – Energy Boost
The company says: Energy Boost – Unique supplement providing targeted nutrition to help encourage energetic and focused behaviour. Contains mixed energy sources as well as the ‘feel good’ herbs ginseng and ginkgo, but it doesn’t include starch so it won’t cause weight gain. RRP: £37.99 for a one month supply. T.E.N. is the definitive new range of highly Targeted Equine Nutrition supplements for horses and ponies, brought to you from the makers of SPILLERS® and available exclusively online.
www.tensupplements.co.uk Our tester, Claire Paisley, says: Energy Boost: Tested on an 8 year-old and fed once daily. This horse is stabled during the day and turned out at night; he is a riding school horse and competes occasionally. It had a positive effect on him, with a number of different riders noticing it seemed to ‘lift’ the horse and gave him more energy in his flatwork. The supplement didn’t make him over excitable or wild, it just made him feel more active. It was easily added to feed and came with a scoop and comprehensive instructions/suggestions about how the product should be fed to your horse.
Nettex – All Purpose Vits & Mins
The company says: General purpose supplement promoting overall health and vitality. Particularly good for those on reduced hard feed rations, ‘oldies’ needing extra support, and competition horses that need to perform at their best, although any horse or pony will benefit from this balanced supplement. Horses lacking in essential vitamins and minerals can develop health problems - sometimes serious ones - so providing everything your horse or pony needs is absolutely vital. Now you can ensure you are doing the best by your horse by simply adding All Purpose Vits & Mins to daily hard feed. RRP: £11.50 (1.5kg).
www.nettexequine.com Our tester, Denise Richardson, says: First thing I noticed was the funky new packaging, not relevant to the product, I know but eye-catching nonetheless! I have been feeding this to the stallions and the young horses and although one or two can be quite fussy about something new in their feed, they all found this very tasty and didn’t leave anything behind. A very comprehensive product and I am very happy with the results to date. I shall continue to feed this and would recommend it.
Nettex - Joint &
Muscle Maintenance The company says: Can be fed to horses and ponies of all ages and disciplines to protect joints and muscles before damage occurs, or to assist in joint and muscle maintenance in older equines. Containing Glucosamine, chondroitin and their amino isolates, plus bio-available molecules to allow more effective absorption. To optimise performance, also includes muscle energisers and stimulators to support and maintain muscle elasticity and flexibility and anti-oxidants to remove toxins from the muscles. This allows faster recovery after exercise and helps prevent muscle-related problems such as tying up.
RRP: Maintenance Liquid £49.50 for 1 litre, Maintenance Powder £49.50 for 1kg.
www.nettexequine.com Our tester, Val Williams, says: We tried these two products on different horses and found the liquid the most palatable, although some were quite happy with the powder - not uncommon for horses to have these preferences. We tried the powder on a retired dressage horse who had competed to Medium over time; it certainly made a difference, especially when first coming out of his stable each day, as he used to be rather stiff. He will definitely stay on it. One of the older Connemara stallions, who had done quite a lot of competing in his life, had been showing signs of stiffness and a little loss of muscle tone. The difference in him is very noticeable and he has gone back to bouncing out of his stable in the mornings. All in all we are impressed and these products are now established in the feed room.

Nettex – Electrolyte
Syringe Paste Boost The company says: This clever paste is administered like a wormer and ideal when ‘on the go’. Containing branch chain amino acids (BCAA), it replaces vital salts lost through heavy sweating in just 30 minutes and will consequently assist in muscle recovery, top up energy levels and prevent the build- up of lactic acid that can lead to muscle cramps/tying up. If these vital salts are not replaced, the horse’s energy levels are quickly reduced, affecting performance and wellbeing. Field kept horses can also sweat during the hotter season and travelling or the stress of moving yard, can lead to heavy sweating.
RRP: £3.99 per 30ml syringe.
www.nettexequine.com Our tester, Gillian McMurray, says: These syringes arrived just at the right time to trial during hot weather. We used the product at the Royal Highland Show and the Highland Pony Society Breed Show. There were very clear instructions for use written on the packaging and also on the graduated syringe. I used a full syringe on a 500kg pony in accordance with the guidance for timings. Easy to administer and appeared palatable. Despite being quite tired and sweaty, the pony had no after effects the following day and appeared quite bright. I liked using electrolytes in this format because the dosage was given directly into the pony’s mouth at a time to suit the pony, unlike being given in a feed. As this hot weather continues, I look forward to using this product at our other shows and outings.
