Alltech – LifeForce Formula
The company says: Specially designed for breeding horses and sport horses in moderate activity. Fed as a daily supplement it delivers the building blocks to enhance the body’s own natural immune system and contains all natural ingredients to provide support for immune function, whilst maintaining a well-balanced microflora in gastrointestinal tract, including the ceacum, helping your horse to extract the maximum nutrients from all feed sources. Improves the quality of a mares’ milk, hence promotes healthy growth in young foals and supports the reproductive system of both mares and stallions, therefore increasing the likelihood of a successful mating and improved stallion conception rates. RRP: £90.00 5kg tub.
www.lifeforcehorse.com Our tester, Clare Chappelhow, says: Fed at a rate of 56g per day, added to feed twice a day. I used it on one of the breeding / competition stallions. His condition remained stable throughout, after having lost condition prior to using this supplement. As this period is quite demanding for a stallion, I would expect him to start increasing in condition now, with continued use of this product. He has a 100% fertility rate this season, along with looking a picture of health and gleaming coat with or without grooming! The horse did not falter at eating his feed when this was first added, as can sometimes happen with other feed supplements. Very good information was provided with the product, which was useful. I will be continuing to use it.
T.E.N - Positive Calm Behaviour
The company says: Positive Calm Behaviour – Ideal for nervous or excitable horses that need a helping hand with staying calm and focused whilst working. It has a ‘two pronged’ approach with two sources of magnesium alongside traditional calming herbs including hops, passiflora and lemon balm. Acidity in the hind gut may also lead to behavioural issues in some horses, so Chamomile is included for its soothing properties and works alongside the buffering effect of magnesium oxide which may help support hind gut health, keeping them focused. RRP: £36.99 for a one month supply. The T.E.N. range is available exclusively online. www.
tensupplements.co.uk
Our tester, Claire Paisley, says: Positive Calm Behaviour: Tested on two different horses, one aged 7 and 17hh and the other aged 7 and 15.2hh, fed once daily. Both horses are stabled during the night, turned out for a few hours each day and both event. The two horses who tried this supplement have quite excitable personalities. However, during the time of testing, both of them were, in general, much quieter. However, both horses are now being turned out in the field and the weather has been very warm, so these factors could have also caused them to be calmer, so I wouldn’t like to say that the more settled behaviour was solely down to the supplement. The product is easily added to feed, and came with a scoop and comprehensive instructions/suggestions about how it should be fed to your horse.

www.horsesupplementsdirect.co.uk Our tester, Pippa Hahn, says: Used on two horses. As a rule I use joint supplement on all my horses, a basic product for young horses, and a top of the range one for my 20 year old Advanced horse Leo. I tried this first on my 10 year old Advanced Medium horse, who doesn’t have any work issues, but comes out a little restricted at the beginning of a session. Almost immediately I saw an improvement in his warm up work and he went on to score his best mark of the year in competition! Having seen an effect so soon I had enough left to try on Leo. This was more difficult as he is already on a top of the range supplement and I noted no real change. However this is great quality, reasonably priced and I would definitely recommend it as you can see quickly if it is being effective.
Nettex – Gut Balancer
The company says: Suitable for horses and ponies of any age, type or breed, to help keep the gut healthy and functioning at its best. Contains Diamond V XPC, a concentrated yeast culture, for optimum performance and can complement and enhance feed digestibility, palatability, fibre digestion and overall health quickly and efficiently. 750g (approx. 30 days supply) RRP: £19.99.
www.nettexequine.com Our tester, Rachel Thomas, says: This was given a really good test! I used it on a little thoroughbred mare who has a tendency to drop weight very easily and, prior to using the balancer, had been quite ill and looked very poor. We started her on the gut balancer straight away and, within a week, she looked different again. We have kept her on it, she is continuing to look fantastic and her health has been great. She is full of beans and, even now she is in full work and going out competing again, she has held her weight, she looks good in her coat and is a very happy horse. I’m sure this product has helped with getting her back to full health and keeps her looking and feeling good - and touch wood, so far she has had no more tummy upsets.
