Once in a Lifetime Volunteer Opportunity with Overseas Equine Charity
Have you always wanted to help working equines abroad? Would you enjoy the challenge and adventure of living and working in a foreign country in a hot climate? A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to volunteer for a small equine charity, the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust in The Gambia, West Africa. The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust (GHDT) is seeking a long term volunteer administrator to help with the charity’s operations in The Gambia for a period of one year – truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for the right person. The GHDT is working to reduce poverty in rural Gambia through improving the health, welfare and productivity of working equines who are heavily relied upon to carry out farming and transportation duties for their owners. This is done through the provision of
veterinary treatments and harnessing materials, and educational animal welfare and management programmes for children and farmers throughout The Gambia.
As a small charity, the GHDT relies on its long term volunteers for successful implementation and administration of its activities within The Gambia. For this reason applicants are required to be educated to a minimum of degree level and ideally have experience of working with both people and equines. An ability to use your own initiative is absolutely essential, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Due to the remote, rural location of the centre long term volunteers are required to regularly work outside of ‘normal’ working hours and have an excellent ability to prioritise appropriately in difficult situations.
The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust was established in 2002 by Heather Armstrong and her sister, the Late Stella Brewer Marsden, to improve the health, welfare and productivity of working equines in The Gambia. A healthy working equine can increase a family’s income by 500%, so through improving equine welfare it is possible to improve the lives of their owners. The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust works in a holistic and sustainable way through a variety of community development and educational programmes. These programmes include training of equine professionals as well as school and farmer education programmes and a twice weekly ‘Donkey Club’ that local children can attend with their donkeys.
