Value of turnout improved by good grazing
At this time of year, especially given the recent dry period, your summer grazing might be looking a bit sparse and if that’s the case, keeping an eye on the weather will ensure you don’t miss the opportunity to spread some fertiliser before any rain to revitalise the grass in your grazing paddocks going forward into autumn.
Linda Thomson from Ayshire explains; “Mine are out 10am - 3pm in the winter and from 9am to around 7 or 8pm in the summer. They are very happy and relaxed horses.”

Olympic dressage rider and trainer Richard Davison is based in Staffordshire and uses Suregrow Fertiliser on all of his grazing paddocks. He says, “When it comes to performance horse training thank goodness the message of good turnout is finally getting across. Horses are designed to be out in paddocks with their necks stretched down and moving their legs around, not cooped up in stables. Like other top yards, our horses are turned out 365 days per year. But to do this we need our paddocks in tip-top condition and Suregrow makes sure they are.”
Other equine magazine readers agree and everyone who posted on our facebook page when we asked about turnout ensures their horses enjoy lengthy spells in the paddock every day.
Ben Mellor from Cumbria says; “I like mine to be out as much as possible. My 2-yr-old lives out all year round, and my older boy lives out all summer (he comes in between 5pm and 9pm every eve to be ridden and fed), then in winter he’s in his stable all night and out in the paddock during daylight hours.

Melanie Bastianiello from Sussex posted; “My boys Jacob, 2 yrs old and Joseph, 16yrs are out 24/7, all year round and although I did get them a shelter, I never close it up, just leave the doors open so the boys can come and go as they please. Don`t believe in locking them up, it`s unnatural. They are both also bareboot, no rugs, no clipping, just horses being horses.
Hannah Freeman from Norfolk says; “I turn my Welsh section D Max out as much as possible. In summer he comes in for a few hours because he has to watch his figure! In winter, he comes in at night when it’s really chilly. Horses are so much better off turned out with friends as much as possible.”
