tried ‘n’ tested Supplementation is KEY
Blue Chip – Joint RLF
The company says: Joint RLF can help maintain the viscosity of synovial (joint) fluid and contains Glucosamine, MSM, Hyaluronic acid, Yucca and Manganese, which all help to nourish the joint, along with a rosehip extract, Rosa canina, that has been proven as 40% more effective than glucosamine*. Rosa canina contains a special glycoside that helps maintain joint comfort by limiting the number of white blood cells allowed into the joint. All the ingredients in Joint RLF are 100% natural and contain no banned substances. RRP: £44.95 1litre.
www.bluechipfeed.com *Reported in the daily telegraph 19/05/09 Our tester, Maria Phillips, says: Used on two young horses ,The older horse 6 years old, competes at novice level affiliated dressage, training towards elementary, hacks out regularly and I also show him, so he can be considered to be in moderate to hard work, as he normally has five to six days work a week. The younger horse, who is 4 years old, hacks out two days per week and is schooled two days a week, has not yet competed and would be considered to be in light to medium work because of his age. I noticed a significant difference in the 6 year old in that he was more mobile the day after hard work than he had been prior to using RLF and the latter, who sometimes shows slight inflammation after a hard session, showed no signs of puffiness. Both found it very palatable with no side effects. I can highly recommend this product as described.
Lanes Health – LitoVet®
The company says: Containing GOPO® - one of the main active components found in the Rosa Canina rose-hip. GOPO® (glycoside of mono and diglycerol). Trialled in performance horses in a published independent double-blind placebo controlled trial that showed natural repair processes were more active in the horses fed LitoVet® and they recorded significantly higher levels of vitamin C. Over 70% of trainers said horses appeared more lithe, supple and easier to work the day after strenuous exercise. The patented LitoVet® production process ensures the GOPO® and high levels of vitamin C are not depleted. LitoVet® is 100% plant-based and vegetarian. RRP: £49.00 1kg tub (approx. 2 months supply).

Our tester, Simon Buckley, says: A natural (Rose Hip) joint care product. I really liked this because, in the days where every way you turn there is a joint care product extolling its own virtues, here is one that is vegetarian and possibly eaten in a natural environment. I can see its use as a preventative part of a horse’s diet from youth into middle age, and as an addition to, not a substitute for prescribed medicines in an older horse becoming a ‘bit arthritic’. I tested the product on a young horse who, at the beginning of the test period, had a soft swelling on one fetlock. The horse found the product palatable and easy to eat. The swelling has now gone and the horse is back in work, fit, healthy and in great condition. It is a product that I shall continue to use.

Choosing the right supplement can be difficult and to help you decide, our panel of testers has been evaluating a range of options, both established and new, all of which are suitable for feeding to both competition horses and those with a less-demanding lifestyle.
Equine Products – Selenavite E
The company says: A comprehensive and effective all round quality horse and pony feed supplement. It is fully balanced for everyday use and provides some 22 micro nutrients including trace elements, vitamins and amino acids. The daily 50g serving provides 2000mg of Vitamin E – a level of supplementation of this important vitamin that is achieved by few other ‘general purpose’ products currently available. 1.5kg (30day supply) = £0.63 per day / £4.41 per week & £19.04 per month. www.equineproducts-ukltd. com
Our tester, Terri Graham, says: This product arrived on the yard at a particularly advantageous time, as due to the poor weather conditions earlier in the year, the horses needed a boost. The area is low in natural Selenium too. I found it more effective than a feed balancer and it works well with the horses’ forage/fibre based diet. The horses found it very palatable, in fact they seem to love it. They are now in superb condition and I am so pleased with the effect that I have ordered more!
N.A.F: Superflex
The company says: Unique ‘totally natural’ formula developed by vets using pharmaceutical grade ingredients, including nutrients proven to support joint health and flexibility, supported powerful, naturally sourced ingredients ‘scientifically verified’ to have antioxidant properties. The antioxidants effectively ‘mop up’ excess toxins that may accumulate around the joint and safely excrete them. Minor strains and traumas, often become more serious due to proliferation of toxins around the area. Available as liquid or powder. RRP’s: 400g powder (30 day supply): £21.95 /800g powder): £38.95 / 1.6kg powder: £68.95 / 500ml Liquid: (20 day supply): £19.95 1 litre Liquid: £33.95 / 2 litre Liquid: £59.95 / 5 litre Liquid: £135.00
www.nat-uk.com Our tester, Claire Paisley, says: Fed once daily to one horse, an eventer aged 16, who is stabled at night and has a few hours of turnout each day. Easy to add to feed and came with a scoop and comprehensive instructions/ suggestions about how the product should be fed to your horse. This product has been developed to help the horse to be supple in his work. During the period of test he has felt in good form during his daily work and although the effect of the product is not obviously apparent, the horse seems to be happy and willing to work. I therefore consider it seems to have helped him as I haven’t encountered any problems during the testing period. I will continue to use it.
