Uplands Academy launched at Great Yorkshire Show
A new Fresh Start Uplands Academy for North Yorkshire has been launched, the announcement following a successful pilot at Newton Rigg College in Cumbria earlier this year. It is aimed at the support and development of the next generation of uplands farmers, land managers and land based businesses.
The co-ordinator for the course will be Graham Bulmer, who farms near Helmsley. He is also a part time lecturer at Askham Bryan College and a steering group member of the Yorkshire Rural Support Network.
Julia Aglionby, Director for the National Centre for the Uplands said: “This is a must for any entrepreneur wanting to start up a business – either farming or non-farming. It’s for those who have the passion but just need that little bit of extra help to build their confidence and help differentiate themselves.”
The initiative was launched on Wednesday 10 July at the Great Yorkshire Show which saw its third highest ever attendance figure – 134,837 visitors came through the gates for the farming and rural showcase.
The Academy is open to anyone over 18 years, and involves 10 sessions over three days and four evenings from Tuesday November 5 through to Tuesday February 11, 2014. Speakers, including farmers, land agents, solicitors and agricultural consultants, will be involved and it will begin by looking at hill farming, understanding assets and capitalising on the soil, habitats, woodlands and energy.
On the timetable will be diversification, joint ventures and tenancies, with other sessions focussing on finances, cash flow, raising capital and presenting a business plan. It costs £50 per person and there are only 20 places. The initiative is supported by The Prince’s Countryside Fund and has RDP funding. The deadline for applications is Monday 30 September.
