the WHP at Strathallen earlier in the season at NPS Scotland. Keeping tradition at the fore, the working harness class took place in the afternoon and was won by Charles Connell with Victor of Alltnacailleach. Victor also took the red ticket in the Junior In hand gelding class. Victor was shown with a traditional deer saddle, with the second placed pony Catriona Lackie’s Fraser of Craignetherty being shown with logging harness. It was a lovely sight to see the ponies in what would be their everyday jobs.

Great Yorkshire Show
Seen as England’s Premier Agricultural, the Great Yorkshire show took near Harrogate in early July. Taking place on the first day of the show was the Inhand M&M section. With Highland Ponies sharing a mixed section with Connemaras and New Forests, the main bulk of the class was made up of Highlands. Best Highland in the youngstock class was Mrs Jenkins 3 year old colt Carlung Peregrine who stood third in a good class. Second in the adult class and reserve in hand champion was Mrs Stanford’s Benbreac of Croila. In third was the highest placed mare, Mrs Grant’s Dunedin Rhiona, while Mrs Craystons Balmoral Merlin was the highest gelding in fourth. Ridden classes take place on the second day of the show and with a HOYS qualifier on offer, large numbers came forward. Highlands have their own class split from the Fells and Dales here at the Yorkshire, giving them chance to shine on their own in the lovely main ring at Harrogate. Judges Tom Best and David Blair set a tricky show which threw a number of ponies. Winner of the class was Dunedin Finale ridden by Chris Grant, with second place going to T McKay’s Lottie of Combebank. With the top two ponies already qualified for Birmingham, the ticket passed down to third – Anne Mitchell’s Dunedin Mountain Rose ridden by Sarah Finlayson. This will be both Sarah and Mountain Rose’s first trip to HOYS.
Connemara
The newly formed North East Connemara Group held its first show at Kirkley Hall College near Ponteland in Northumberland at the end of June, writes Val Williams. The facilities at Kirkley Hall are very good, with an indoor school and two outdoor so we knew the show could run whatever the weather, and after last year’s

cancellations due to all the rain, we had to take this factor into consideration.
Considering this was our first show the entries were good and we had a lot of late entries on the day. Fiona Cameron judged the in-hand classes and some lovely ponies came forward.
Mrs. H. Horsfall judged the ridden classes and again some beautiful ponies were in the ring and Bellindene Franklyn was supreme of show.
The Group are hoping to organise a combined training in the autumn and details will be advertised soon.
