Hazel Noble and Charlotte Kenyon have qualified to compete in the South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) Search for A Star Championships at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). Hazel earned her coveted place in the final at the rqualifying show held at Onley Grounds Equestrian Complex, near Rugby and Charlotte booked her ticket at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre in Buckinghamshire.

Hazel, from Carlisle in Cumbria, rode her mother, Ann Noble’s horse, Morandi, to finish runner up in the Riding Horse/ Hack class, earning a qualification to the finals. Hazel has had the 15 year old bay gelding for 2 years, having bought him through her instructor, Richard Nichol, with the intention of doing show jumping. “We started doing BS affiliated jumping and ex-racehorse jumping classes and were competing at Discovery level but Morandi decided he didn’t like it so we started showing”, said Hazel. The pair had won the Trailblazers ex-racehorse jumping championship in 2011 and

started showing in 2012. They qualified for the Retraining Of Racehorses final at Hickstead and finished 5th in the National Hunt section. Last year they went to the Vale View Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifier and stood 3rd, just missing out on qualification for HOYS. “He likes an atmosphere and really enjoyed it at Hickstead. He is not fizzy, is very polite and really showed himself well there”, explained Hazel, who is a 6th Form student. The pair have two more outings planned before heading to HOYS. “We have lots of work to do, but I am really looking forward to it”, said Hazel. Charlotte Kenyon, from Wilmslow in Cheshire, riding her own Royal Approval, was runner up in the Riding Club Show Horse, earning their qualification to the finals. This popular class saw 21 entries split for the initial judging, where competitors are required to tackle trotting poles and two small fences. The 5 year old, known as “Vinnie” at home, has been owned by Charlotte for just a year and the pair were competing at their

4th show. “I had two back operations in January and so we have not been able to do much”, said Charlotte, who works as a primary school supply teacher and has two children, so fits horses around work and family. “We have been riding around the farm and have done some working hunter classes at local shows. He will have a holiday now and then we will do more dressage and get some more weight on him before HOYS. I have always wanted to qualify – I tried a long time ago but it worked this time. I am shocked”, said an emotional Charlotte after the class. “He is such a big softy, he just takes to everything. He jumped really big over the fence – he was determined not to touch it! We will go to HOYS to enjoy it”, she added. Charlotte was assisted at the show by her friends, Anna Main and Kate Dewhurst. “The Search For A Star Championship series is a way to give amateur riders the chance to achieve their dream of riding at The Horse Of The Year Show. The standard increases every year and we are delighted to give so many riders this opportunity”, said Nicolina MacKenzie, Marketing Manager at South Essex Insurance Brokers For more information, visit www. search4astar.org.uk or www. racehorse2ridinghorse.co.uk
