Maths Masterclass Report
Dunblane Primary School’s Golden Jubilee We want to hear from you...
Dunblane Primary School will be
commemorating its Golden Jubilee in April and May this year. The school is looking forward to celebrating its beginnings as Dunblane Junior Secondary in 1963 with pupils, parents, members of the community and, of course, ex-pupils and staff.
Sally Kennedy, the headteacher, and children would love to hear from you if you were a pupil at Dunblane in the ’60s. Do you have any memorabilia you could send in, to help the school rediscover its roots? Photos (originals or preferably copies), old school ties, old lunchboxes – anything you can send in to the head teacher Sally Kennedy would be very welcome. Please label anything you do send with your name, address and a description and don’t send anything of value. The school will do its best to return everything but there’s always a possibility of items being misplaced.
Help us take a trip down memory lane. What games did you used to play at breaktimes? Do you have any old peevers or skipping ropes from that time? What was Dunblane’s school day like back then? What songs remind you of your childhood in the 60s? Please feel free to send in anecdotal stories form this bygone era in the school.
Celebrations will include a special ceremony on 1 May with invited guests, a competition with a prize of a ’60s Jubilee school dinner for pupils, ’60s sports activity and playground games and a Jubilee Jig. There will also be an Open Door Jubilee, offering past staff and pupils the chance to tour the school and view the memorabilia, and a school Jubilee Jamboree disco organised by the Parent Council.
Please send any memories and memorabilia to: Sally Kennedy, Headteacher, Dunblane Primary School, Doune Road, Dunblane FK15 9AU. Email :

Over the course of four weekends, myself and other pupils in my year
group attended
a series of maths- based masterclasses at Stirling University. These classes were taught by lecturers from Stirling, Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities, but the key ideas were put forward in a format accessible to schoolchildren.
The first lecture taught me a lot about countable and uncountable infinities and the infinite amount of ‘real numbers’. Examples of this aspect of mathematics were demonstrated very clearly by the lecturer and I understood most of the main details!
I found the second masterclass, presented by Dr. Ulrich Kremer, to be especially interesting. This lecture was on symmetry and taught us all about strategies towards geometry-related board games, how to calculate the amount of edges on a 3-D polygon and other fascinating points about a very broad topic.
The third instalment of the series was all to do with properties of squares. The lecture was particularly engaging, as we all had to construct a huge tetrahedron with what looked like main components of a tent. I learned much more about geometry and how the science of squares works in this lesson.
Finally, we looked at basic probability, which I previously knew little about. However, by the end of it all I could work out various scenarios to do with dice- based games and how to win more easily! These masterclasses were a great success and showed us all just how much there is still to discover about maths.
