Gardener’s Tips and Advice Kindly supplied by George at Mo-Lawn/Stockbridge Nurseries Lots of jobs to do in the garden this month...

Beware of late frosts and keep vulnerable shrubs with new shoots covered at night when frost is forecast,. Invest in some frost fl eece as it is reasonably priced and may last several seasons.

Deadhead daff odils and narcissi, give them liquid feed or a sprinkle of bone meal and let them die back naturally. Do not cut off the leaves, as they are necessary to replenish the bulbs for next year.

Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it tidy and encourage new fl owers.

Hoe your borders to get rid of weeds before they spread.

April is a good month to trim evergreens. Junipers Cypress and Conifer remove all dead and diseased parts, but do not cut into the bare wood.

Forsythias can be cut back when fi nished fl owering.

Invest in a soil testing kit to get the Ph level of your soil, and based on the test results you can work in appropriate amounts of lime, fertiliser and or manure. Chemical fertilizers can be added to but if applied too early will leach out of soil and loose their eff ectiveness.

April is a good time to plant peas, carrots, cabbage, caulifl ower, spinach etc. Root crops like, potato, radish, parsnips, onions can be

planted anytime. As your direct seeded crops sprout make sure you thin them to prevent crowding, invest in fl eece to cover them from frost.

Apply spring fertilizer in April to the lawn, never any earlier.

If you have moss in the

lawn use a fertiliser with moss killer included and then you do both jobs at once. Spring is a good time to remove thatch and overseed the lawn as thatch can build up and smother the lawn and provides a good environment for disease. Remove the moss with a rake and then spread grass seed to help fi ll in spaces were weeds and moss might grow, but grass seed will not grow if you have used a mosskiller.

Remember to spike the lawn

to both aerate it and let water down into the lawn soil for the dryer months.
