Help children bake hot cross buns for Easter.


Baking with yeast seems magical; the dough actually grows!


• Heat oven to 200°C, gas 7. •


Into a bowl tip 500g strong white bread fl our, ½ tsp salt, 2 heaped tsp mixed spice and 50g castor sugar.


• Rub 50g of butter with your fi nger tips. Add 200g mixed dried fruit. Sprinkle on 7g sachet dried yeast. Stir. Warm 200 mls milk.

Mix and leave for 5


• Take dough out of bowl. Cut into 8 pieces. Shape into buns on a fl oured surface.


Place buns on a baking


sheet, cover loosely with cling fi lm and leave in a warm place until size increases by half (45-75mins).

Mix 3 table spoons plain fl our with 2 table spoons water. Pour into piping bag and pipe a cross on each bun. Bake for 12-15 mins, then brush with honey.
