Being prepared for flooding
To forecast flooding, SEPA and the MET Office work closely together, using river and coastal monitoring, weather forecasts and computer modelling to predict when an area is likely to flood.
Scottish Flood Forecasting Service
Tackling flooding together Public bodies are working closer than ever before to help Scotland prepare for flooding and reduce the adverse consequences on our communities
The impacts of flooding can be devastating and with around 125,000 properties at flood risk in Scotland we need to be prepared to take action and reduce the impacts of flooding on our homes, communities, economy and environment.
Last year, Scotland had one of its wettest summers to date. The Met Office estimates that 134% of July’s average rainfall fell in the first two weeks of the month and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) issued 14 Flood Warnings throughout a five hour period one Saturday morning alone. Climate change predictions suggest that the number and severity of storms are likely to increase so we all need to be prepared to take action against the impacts of flooding.
Public bodies are sharing resources, knowledge and expertise to deliver a more planned and co-ordinated approach to how we manage flooding in Scotland. Although flooding can never be prevented entirely, by improving our knowledge of the sources and impacts of floods and giving communities and emergency responders more time to act, we can reduce the flood risk we face and the impacts of flooding.

The Scottish Flood Forecasting Service is a joint initiative which draws on the specialist knowledge of SEPA and the Met Office to predict the timing and likelihood of flooding.
The initiative is the first of its kind, combining SEPA’s hydrological information with the MET Office’s meteorological information to produce daily Flood Guidance Statements. The Flood Guidance Statement, issued to emergency services, local authorities and other Category 1 and 2 responders, presents an overview of the expected flood risk across Scotland for the next five days ahead and identifies situations that could cause flooding and significant disruption to normal life.
With SEPA’s expertise in flood warning and the Met Office weather data, we can provide better information to key responders, giving them more time to prepare for the impacts of flooding and help to protect lives and property.
Working with local authorities
SEPA works closely with local authorities on all aspects of flooding. As well as receiving the Flood Guidance Statement, local authorities work with SEPA to help improve the Floodline service, which provides advance Flood Warnings for members of the public, by identifying where we can better target resources in the areas where more flooding information is needed.
