Grove Clouds are illuminated by 4000K LED projects, custom-made by Mike Stoane Lighting, to reproduce the ethereal appearance of moonlit clouds.
This ensured that the light fittings were out of the way of the public and capable of sufficient illumination, whilst remaining visually sympathetic to the Shoal.
THE GROVE
Some of the visual themes created for the Shoal are echoed in the Grove, a pedes- trian area that is designed to provide a new market space. A line of newly planted trees, London Planes, create a barrier between the space and the gyratory road. These are lit at night with iGuzzini inground LED uplights to emphasise the divide between vehicular and pedestrian spaces. At the centre of the Grove, Studio Egret West designed a cluster of tree-like forms known as the ‘Grove Clouds’. These refer- ence the Shoal by taking three of its leaf shapes, turned onto their sides, and placing
them atop a single steel trunk that branches out into an organic framework. Onto the branches, the team installed LED projectors on custom brackets that skate light across the underside of the leaves, again enhanc- ing their form and texture. In this instance 4000K LEDs were specified to complement the cool colour of the metal surface, the intention being to reproducing the ethereal appearance of clouds when backlit by the moon.
While it remains too early judge if the Olympic legacy for London - and specifically Stratford - will meet the hopes of plan- ners, the success of projects like Stratford Island suggest that a wider, deeper lasting regeneration of the area may well be within reach.

2012 fanden im Stadtteil Stratford im Osten Londons die Olympischen Spiele statt. Ein Großteil der Inves- titionen ging in den Olympiapark, doch die Planer wollten ebenfalls gewährleisten, dass das urbane Umfeld, das die Besucher bei ihrer Ankunft im Park und im neuen Westfield Einkaufszentrum sehen, auch seine eigene starke Identität hat. Ein besonderer Be- reich war Stratford Island, ein Bereich der Innenstadt, der durch die dreispurige A11 Fahrbahn abgegrenzt wird. Die Beleuchtungsdesigner LAPD wollten ein quali- tativ hochwertiges, warmes weißes Licht kreieren, um diesem Bereich eine angenehme und einladende Atmosphäre zu verleihen. Sie verwendeten ebenfalls einen einheitlichen Leuchtkörperstil, der sich von denen unterscheidet, die in der Umgebung verwendet werden, um der Insel einen eindeutigen Charakter zu verleihen. Der einzige Bereich, in dem wir keine LED verwendeten,
war der A11-Kreisverkehr, der den Standort einkreist. Dieser wurde zuvor durch überdimensionierte, dekora- tive Straßenlampen beleuchtet, die Natriumdampf- Hochdrucklampen verwenden. LAPD entschied sich für ein neues Kolonnendesign und das Hauptmerkmal der Insel, der ‘Shoal’, eine 250 m lange kinetische Skulptur, die auf einer Seite des Kreisverkehrs entlang verläuft, wird durch im Boden versenkte LED-Lampen beleuchtet.

La città di Stratford nella zona est di Londra è stata la protagonista delle Olimpiadi del 2012. Molto si è investito nella creazione del Parco Olimpico, ma i pro- gettisti si sono concentrati anche sull’ambiente urba- no circostante – visibile ai visitatori appena arrivati sia al Parco che al nuovo centro commerciale West- field – e alla sua forte identità. Un’area particolare di questa zona è stata rappresentata da Stratford Island, una zona del centro città delimitata dall’autostrada A11 a tre corsie.
I progettisti dell’illuminazione LAPD hanno voluto creare per questa zona una luce bianca calda, di alta qualità, confortevole ed invitante. Hanno inoltre utilizzato dispositivi di illuminazione completamente diversi da quelli presenti nelle aree circostanti, per distinguere Stratford Island dalle altre zone ed attri- buirgli un carattere distintivo. L’unica zona in cui non si è utilizzata una illuminazione al LED è stata l’area della giratoria dell’A11 che circonda l’intero sito, prec- edentemente illuminata da un’ illuminazione di strada decorativa e fuori misura che utilizzava una risorsa di luce al sodio ad alta pressione. LAPD ha specificato un nuovo progetto a colonna e un’attrazione principale dell’isola, lo “Shoal”, una scultura cinetica lunga 250m che corre lungo un lato della giratoria illuminato da LED incassati all’interno della pavimentazione.

La ciudad de Stratford en el este de Londres fue la ubicación para los Juegos Olímpicos 2012. La cre- ación del Parque Olímpico se llevó mucha inversión,
pero los proyectistas también querían asegurarse que el entorno urbano de los alrededores- visible a los visitantes al llegar al Parque y el nuevo centro de compras Westfield- tuviera su propia identidad fuerte. Un área en particular fue Stratford Island, una zona del centro de la ciudad delimitada por la calzada A11 de tres carriles. Los diseñadores de iluminación LAPD quisieron crear una luz blanca cálida de alta calidad para hacer del espacio un lugar confortable y atractivo. Además uti- lizaron un estilo de artefactos uniforme, diferente a los utilizados en las áreas de los alrededores, para darle a la Isla un carácter diferente. La única zona en la que no utilizamos LED fue en la A11 giratoria que circunda el sitio. Ésta fue iluminada con anterioridad por un alumbrado público decorativo y demasiado grande utilizando una fuente de luz de sodio de alta presión. LAPD especificó un nuevo diseño de columna y la característica principal de la Isla, el Shoal, una escultura cinética de 250 metros de largo que corre a lo largo de uno de los lados de la calzada giratoria que tiene iluminación LED bajo tierra.
