Over the course of the design process it was decided that integrating light sources into the structure would prove prohibitively ex- pensive. Top left At the entrance to the Stratford Centre shopping precint, the spacing between trunks widens to create a bridge of leaves that rises above the rest of the piece. Narrow beam Philips eW Burst LED projectors ARE mounted onto the structure to illuminate this piece of the Shoal.
Top right Urbis lighting columns match the height of streetlighting along the A11, but are unique to the Stratford Island gyratory. The positioning of these columns had to be carefully considered to work sympathetically alongside the Shoal.

La ville de Stratford à l’est de Londres a été le lieu des Jeux Olympiques 2012. Il y a eu beaucoup d’investissements dans la conception du parc olympique, mais les plan- ificateurs voulaient aussi s’assurer que l’environnement urbain - visible par les visiteurs dès leur arrivée dans le
parc et le nouveau centre commercial de Westfield - ait sa propre identité forte. Un endroit en particulier était l’île de Stratford, une zone du centre-ville délimité par les trois voies A11. Les concepteurs de l’éclairage LAPD ont voulu créer une lumière blanche et chaude de haute qualité, pour rendre l’espace confortable et accueillant. Ils ont également utilisé un style uniforme de fixation, différents de ceux utilisés aux alentours, pour donner à l’île un caractère distinct. Le seul endroit dans lequel nous n’avons pas utilisé les LED était sur le giratoire A11 qui entoure le site. Il a été préalablement éclairé par un éclairage public décoratif à l’aide d’une source à haute pression de sodium léger. LAPD a spécifié une nouvelle colonne design et carac- téristique principale de l’île, le ‘Shoal “, une sculpture cinétique de 250 mètres de long qui longe un côté de la chaussée et qui est illuminé par éclairage LED sou- terrain.
