Last year was rounded off with an impressive range of Glasgow Talks events, with high-profile figures sharing their words of wisdom to a rapt crowd of Chamber members
Greg Clark
place in the UK for foreign investors for the third year in a row. Many opportunities exist for
Scotish businesses looking to take their operations abroad, with seven out of 10 of the predicted fastest growing economies in the world between 2010 and 2015 located in Africa. Te Holyrood Government
is placing a heavy emphasis on driving exports, hoping to increase exports by 50 per cent in the next four years, a target Scotish Enterprise is also striving towards, recently opening seven new offices across the globe. Scotish Enterprise is also
using the Global Scots Network to help companies develop on the world stage, while doing all they can to encourage investment both domestically and into international markets. Lena mentioned a lot of companies are siting on a lot of cash but in her
view, too many are puting off investment with much more to be done to share experiences and success stories in order to encourage others to commit. Scotish Enterprise is working with bank boards to illustrate what companies need, while also assisting businesses in how best to prepare for presentations to banks. As with all the Glasgow Talks
events, Lena’s presentation was followed by a lively and informative Q&A session, covering a wide range of relevant topics for the city’s business community. Looking back, it is clear that
2012 was a very successful year for the series, with many sold out events and an impressive roster of guest speakers joining the mix. Particular highlights included
the BBC’s economic specialist, Robert Peston, airline magnate Willie Walsh and Steve Cram, BBC commentator and former Olympic athlete, who visited the city fresh from his sterling performance with the BBC during the Olympics. Tis year the itinerary is set
to be even bigger with many high-profile names on our target list and a number already confirmed. For more information about which influential speakers will be appearing at these business seminars, visit our website (

Robert Peston
supported by the Clydesdale Bank and the University of Glasgow’s Business School.
