Chaired by Paul Mitchell,
General Manager, House of Frasers Glasgow, the Retail Association’s initial focus includes: » access to city centre » promotion of city centre » enhancing the visitor experience
» maintenance of the city centre
» contributing to the long- term sustainability of the city centre. Its overall aim is to support the sector as a key employer and contributor to Glasgow’s economy and to help identify business priorities for the future development of the city centre.

Commonwealth volunteers needed
The hunt to recruit 15,000 volunteers for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has begun with the launch of the Volunteer Centre. The Albion Street centre was
opened by Glasgow 2014 chairman Lord Smith with the help of Clyde, the mascot for the Games. Official online applications opened
in January. More than 40,000 people from across the UK have registered their interest in becoming a 2014
Games volunteer. The centre in Glasgow’s Merchant City will host an anticipated 1,000 interviews a week for the huge range of volunteer roles. Not all of the roles will be high
profile or in the front line and many might be away from the athletes. They are all, however, crucial to making sure the Games run smoothly. All volunteers are required to be
16 or over when application opens in mid-January, be eligible to work in the UK and must be available for at least eight days between 23 July and 3 August in 2014.

Milestone reached in the building of new retail space on Buchanan Street
Development
Land Securities £70 million retail and residential investment in Scotland’s premier retail destination has reached a key milestone. The Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP joined developers Land Securities and construction giants Balfour Beatty at the end of October 2012 to top out the development
on Glasgow’s iconic Buchanan Street. The site will be transformed into modern retail
and residential space with nine new retail stores (including Forever 21, Paperchase, Gap, Fat Face and Skechers) and 49 apartments with an eagerly anticipated roof garden. The development is progressing on time and to budget by Balfour Beatty.
