engineering landscape. Complementing the globally renowned performances of each of these engineering heavyweights, and yet another example of Glasgow’s ability to adapt into the 21st century against an evolving sectoral landscape, are modern projects such as the city’s title as the UK’s first Smart City. Te IBM Smarter Cities Challenge is a

competitive grant programme in which IBM is awarding a total of $50 million worth of technology and services to 100 municipalities worldwide since 2011, with Glasgow receiving the first crown in the UK. Te grant gives Glasgow access to IBM’s top

experts to analyse and recommend ways the city can become an even beter place in which to live, work and play. Teams of specially selected IBM professionals provide city leaders with analysis and recommendations to support successful growth, beter delivery of city services, more citizen engagement, and improved efficiency. Te selection process was extremely

complex, adding further weight to Glasgow’s success aſter IBM picked cities which made the strongest case for participating in the challenges. Teir researchers, technical experts and

consultants immerse themselves in local issues and offer a range of options and recommended next-steps. Focusing on issues such as healthcare, education, safety, social services, transportation, communications, sustainability, budget management, energy, and utilities, their aim is to enhance efficiency in the urban environment. Following on the theme of innovation is the

University of Strathclyde’s £89m Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC). Being built by Lend Lease, the Technology and Innovation Centre will bring together academics, researchers and project managers from the university and its leading industrial partners to help develop Scotland’s economic future. Te centre will be the first of its kind in

Europe and will become the cornerstone of the International Technology and Renewable Energy Zone (ITREZ) – Scotland’s hub for global green energy developments. Once completed, TIC will revolutionise the

way researchers in academia and industry collaborate and innovate together – with up to 1,200 researchers, engineers and project managers from academia and industry working side-by-side in a state-of-the-art building in the heart of Glasgow. Some of the brightest minds in the sector will

find solutions to challenges in areas central to economic regeneration in Scotland and further afield – including power and energy, renewable technologies, photonics and sensors, advanced engineering, pharmaceutical manufacturing and bio-nano systems. Projects such as TIC and IBM Smarter Cities

show just how far Glasgow has come since the days of trialling the first steam engines on the Clyde – and shows it is still at the forefront of the engineering sector. Te major firms have shown massive resilience, standing firm in the face of tough economic conditions. Also, the city is still a world leader in a number of different sectors, working to keep Glasgow at the cuting edge of development in Scotland, ensuring the country’s legacy lasts for many years to come.
