“The venue was bustling with entrepreneurs, each divulging their business secrets”

is interactive and audience friendly. People listening to the speakers are encouraged to get involved and atendees are even given time at the end to meet with guest speakers. Tese qualities make CROWD a highly rewarding learning experience for all atending. Additionally, CROWD II was split

between two separate theatres, giving delegates the choice of who they wanted to listen to. Tere was also a short break, which gave those presenting the chance to speak to one another and share business tips. In keeping with the Chamber’s focus on

digital media, speakers were given the chance to publicise themselves by stepping in front of the camera, with students from City of Glasgow College documenting the proceedings for a short video which appeared on Glasgow Chamber’s website (see right). Overall, the event was a huge success with

a diverse mixture of guests from the city’s business community turning up to get involved with the seminar. It was so well received that event organisers were hinting at a possible CROWD III. In fact, the consensus from delegates

and speakers was extremely positive, with feedback suggesting the event was of great value to all who atended, with many enquiring about the possibly of a follow up in 2013. What was also apparent throughout the

morning was the level of satisfaction with the model of the event, viewed by many as an extremely refreshing take on the traditional conference set-up. With the city’s calendar already packed for the year, such an innovative approach to events went down extremely well, connecting with audiences in creative ways. Whether it be the impressive roster of

speakers on show, the eclectic model of the event or range of knowledge shared throughout the morning, it’s easy to see why CROWD will go from strength to strength. Te venue was bustling with some of the city’s finest entrepreneurs, each divulging their business secrets to an extremely receptive audience, all keen to learn. From the success of the event it seems that sometimes it is okay to follow the CROWD.

Students currently studying practical journalism and television production at City of Glasgow College filmed interviews with presenters and attendees at Glasgow Chamber’s CROWD II event

EDUCATION

CITY OF GLASGOW COLLEGE STUDENTS JOIN THE CROWD

In continuing the shared experience approach which is fundamental to the CROWD ethos, student journalists and TV producers of the future from one of the country’s biggest colleges were given unrestricted access to Chamber members and event presenters on the day. The six-strong team, currently studying

practical journalism and television production at City of Glasgow College, attended each CROWD II presentation and filmed interviews with presenters and attendees at the half-day event. Arranged in partnership with the Chamber

and David McKinney, Head of Department for Media and Drama at the college, a Chamber Platinum Partner, the assignment was designed to give the students practical experience in reporting at a live event in written, digital and broadcast formats. They also gained exclusive access to many Chamber members, each currently creating their own business success stories, while attending the CROWD II event. CROWD II gave the reporting team the opportunity to work in the field, while honing their communication skills and interview techniques through the platform of a four-hour conference-style event.

David McKinney said: “Our work is helped by

projects such as this one, where students can work for a client and mirror industry practice. “We are indebted to Glasgow Chamber of

Commerce and The BIG Partnership for their help. We are hoping to build on the contacts we have made at the CROWD II event and hopefully we can collaborate further in the future.” The students were given access to keynote

speakers at CROWD II, including: easyJet’s Hugh Aitken; Tree of Knowledge Managing Director Gavin Oattes; Kyron Keogh of Scottish luxury jewellers Rox; Two Fat Ladies restaurateur Ryan James and Russell Walker of production company Demus. Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Chief

Executive Stuart Patrick said: “We were delighted to welcome the City of Glasgow College students to participate in CROWD II and thank them for their hard work. “They did a sterling job on the day and

conducted themselves professionally while interviewing our members and presenters. “As well as garnering the experience of

attending, reporting and filming a live event, the students also gained invaluable access to some of the country’s leading business figures.”
