Emirates Arena Glasgow’s new velodrome roars into life
A total of 75,000 people attended sessions at Glasgow’s new £113 million Emirates Arena in the first two months of opening. The sports venue has
attracted more than 1,000 new Glasgow Club members, with almost three quarters coming
from the East End. Since it opened on 5 October,
the arena has played host to six major sporting events at Scottish, European or World level. The busiest period was during
the UCI Track Cycling World Cup, attended by more than 20,000
people. Six times gold-medalist Sir Chris Hoy was among those at the venue named in his honour as Glasgow hosted the event on 17-19 November 2012. The Olympian joined spectators taking in the final day of action at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Award Glasgow has been named as a top 10 tourism city by TripAdvisor. The city topped the ranking for UK cities, and was the sixth in the European poll by the travel website, coming ahead of Manchester, Belfast and Liverpool.
The 2012 Travellers’ Choice
Destinations on the Rise Awards go to cities which have recorded the greatest increase in positive feedback and interest from travellers year on year. Organisers believe growing
interest in Glasgow may be linked to the city hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
