65% DID YOU KNOW?

he office is no longer defined by a fixed address, four walls, a roof and a computer terminal in the modern business world. Tese days, your

place of work could easily be the interior of a train carriage, the table of a bistro, or the cabin of a Boeing 747. We are in an age where most smartphones

and tablet devices are as capable as their desktop counterparts, allowing people to work as if they are in the office – be they out and about in Glasgow, London, or the most far-flung points of the globe. Tese devices allow you to check your

email, store your documents and have your work with you wherever you go. However, with so much

technology available, where do you start to ensure you have exactly what you need? We take a look at the tools of the mobile working trade...

DEVICES

Everyone has now heard of the iPad and is more than familiar with its

atributes, but, despite the recent release of the iPad Mini, other manufacturers are determined not to let Apple have things

all its own way in the tablet market. Autumn last year saw the

UK introduction of the Microsoſt Surface, for example – a tablet device with a 10.6-inch screen and a keyboard built into the cover. Te tablet comes with a

Windows 8 operating system and Microsoſt Office pre-installed, which is handy for sending and opening those Word doc email atachments. Perhaps the biggest

draw, however, is the fact the kick-stand cover acts as a lightweight, plug-in keyboard – although only the higher spec models come with this as standard. And for

those who need to do a lot of typing when out and about, the space age-style Magic Cube may just provide an easier alternative to cumbersome detachable keyboards or obstructive on-screen interfaces. Te Celluon Magic Cube gets round

these issues by projecting its keyboard onto any surface, creating an easily storable, full-sized virtual keyboard with a multi- touch mouse, that makes typing simple and intuitive. Te manufacturer says the large keys

allow for input speeds greater than standard physical keyboards, without blocking the screen, and there is no complex set up – just connect the cube to your device via Bluetooth or USB and you’re away. You do need a bit of space to use the

Magic Cube, however, so it’s probably best for using in a café or hotel, rather than on a train or plane.

USEFUL APPS

When you’ve got the right device for you, you need the right applications to run on it.

Here are some essentials... Quickoffice allows you to view and edit Microsoſt Office documents on the move. It also connects to popular cloud storage services including Dropbox and Google Drive. HulloMail is a modified voicemail service for your smartphone. It allows you to see
