More and more organisations are taking up the opportunities presented by mobile working. However, with opportunities come challenges and responsibilities. With smartphones,
notebooks and tablets all allowing us and our workforce to access information immediately, anywhere, the need to return to the office to file information or to communicate with colleagues no longer exists. Tis should mean that people are free to manage their time and their workload more effectively. Te downside is that as
managers are we aware of what our people are doing? Are they buckling under the strain of their tasks and no-one notices? Are they puting in excessive hours? Is this new method of working meaning that we are driving more and taking fewer breaks? Do the devices themselves create issues,
phones ringing when we are driving. Should we ban mobile working? Of course not! We do need to
recognise the hazards, manage the risks and ensure that we have guidelines, monitored and enforced. Guidelines that say how long we expect people to work, a way of reporting to ensure that the hours are being kept. Guidelines that insist that no calls are made when driving, and hands free calls are minimised. Managers should be aware of what arrangements are in employees’ cars for receiving calls. Managed properly, current
technology should allow us all to work more flexibly and re-dress the work-life balance.
