Southgate Tack’s First Anniversary In Dundalk

By Kelly Bowers www.davisfeed.ca

In the small Ontario community of Dundalk, there is a new retail store in a rural location. South- gate Tack, owned by Mau- reen Sullivan and her hus- band John Pugliese, recent- ly celebrated their first anniversary. Fortunately for Maureen, John is a con- tractor. So, last summer, John built the store into their barn for Maureen to operate as a tack shop. The building is situated on 100 acres with an outdoor training arena and the barn for their three cutting hors- es.

Maureen started riding actively sixteen years ago but “had to give it up because of work commit- ments and long hours commuting every day”. Maureen explains, “John is not just my private contractor but also my coach. He helps me rebuild my confidence and skills.” John, who started riding over 20 years ago, was OCHA 1990 Champion but in recent years, the couple enjoy riding together for pleasure along the road & trails on their property. Maureen moved to the farm three years ago from Hamilton but John has lived there for about 15 years. They are both members of the AQHA & OCHA, OEF & The Chamber of Commerce. Because of their riding experience, the couple enjoy support from local barrel racers, team ropers, competitive trail riders & team penning riders. The new store focuses on their passion for horses. They carry tack and giftware and horse supplies. They have new western saddles by Jasper Haynes & Western Rawhide and often have a few used saddles for a smaller budget. The gift and art selection is comprised of names such as Joan Baker Stain Glass, Marcia Baldwin art, figurines and mugs, and Horse of a Different figurines and mugs. Home decor items by Peak Time Corp., fea- turing Big Country can also be found. The most recent addition is Hoofbeats & Pawprints by Janet Griffin Scott. The store boasts the largest selection of gifts, art and home decor in the area. Customers often remark how reasonable the prices are and Maureen explains that since the shop is located on the farm, they do not have high overhead costs and can keep selling prices lower.

This past summer, I met Mau- reen during four days she spent at the 2012 Holstein Rodeo. She describes the experience as “fabulous” and is looking forward to doing more events next summer, so watch for her at your next rodeo. Although a website is still in the planning stages, you can brownse their tack and horse supplies at www.TackDepot.ca, and you can find Southgate tack on Facebook at www.facebook.com/southgate.tack. For contact information, look for a Southgate ad in the Holiday Gift Barn of The Rider and soon in our tackshop directory section.
