Associations Equine Niagara News - Four years ago, owning a riding stable or even just a horse or two was a little frustrating in trying to find out what was going on in the horse com- munity in Niagara. There was no one place a horse-owner could go to find out where and when the next show, tack sale, or equine event was hap- pening. It meant driving from tack shop to tack shop reading notices posted on bulletin boards. This was extremely time consuming, expensive on gas and more often than not the event one really wanted to know about was posted on those bulletin boards five minutes after you had been and gone. Facebook had started but was not used to the extent it is today and unless you were a member of a saddle club or local equine orga- nization that provided newsletters, there was nothing to keep you up-to- date.

Central Ontario Pleasure Driving Association

Being an owner of a stable offering riding lessons, boarding and public trail rides, I decided that if I couldn’t find the information easily, neither could anyone else and thus Equine Niagara News was born. Hav- ing a marketing agency, it was easy for me to create an on-line publica- tion and website for this purpose, and since I attended many equine events with my horses and students it was also easy to report on the events. After the first couple of issues being distributed by email to the local horse-owners it was even easier as now organizations, riders and stables

were starting to send me information. The horse-lovers of Niagara also sent many notes thanking me for starting such a publication and encourage- ment to keep it going. They were truly appreciative that I saw the need for the publication and created it. Equine Niagara News is welcomed and waited for in many inboxes across Niagara every two weeks. Publishing every two weeks with a classified issue on the off week was keeping Niagara informed on a week- ly basis. No searching required. Every week I enjoyed sitting down to create each issue. Some weeks it was more challenging than others due to my time, but I didn’t want to let the readers down. I was always searching for the next story. As time progressed I was approached by writers and advertisers that wanted to be part of Equine Niagara News. Nick Costa, ENNs race writer has been with me from almost the begin- ning. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Nick and loved the information he provided for the race industry on a local level as well as across the conti- nent. Readers were constantly send- ing me story ideas, submitting articles

From Our Founder

Remembering October/

November1978

Lorna Aylett nee Bishop of Fen- wick, Ontario died October 2nd.,1978 from the ravages of Cancer. Lorna fought bravely for 2 years but lost her battle. She was married to Chuck Aylett also of Fenwick. Lorna showed our Paint Gelding, Chiefs Dan Patch to the Ontario Paint Horse Clubs English Pleasure Championship and Western Pleasure Championship in 1972. Chuck showed Dan in Halter and won the Reserve Gelding championship.

Ontario Combined Driving Association

John Leckie Limited advertised their new Quarter Quilt blankets and hoods.

The Ontario Competitive Trail Association sanctioned Canada’s first 100 mile (160 km.) Endurance Ride in Flesherton, Ontario on August 11-13, thirty six horses took part. Dr. Matthew Mackay-Smith on a TB Gelding and Winky Mackay-Smith on an Arab Gelding tied for first place with 12 hours 12 minutes at 8.2 miles per hour.

Great Britain won the Presidents Cup in convincing fashion at the 1978 Spruce Meadows Show Season wrap up in Calgary.

Sue Kinsella was crowned Rodeo Queen for 1979 at the Western World Horse Show and Rodeo at Exhibition Place on October 8th, 1978. It was so nice to see her again at the grand open- ing of the Animal Cancer Centre in Guelph recently. (See story on page...)

The Copenhagen / Skoal Rodeo Superstars Championship offered the richest first place prizes in rodeo histo-

and events for publication and com- menting on those articles through the facebook page and by email. I loved the interaction. I also enjoyed all the connections with horse-enthusiasts throughout the world all because of one publication geared to keeping the Nia- gara Region informed of all things ‘horse’. ENN’s main readers are in Niagara Region, but also includes a large following in the London, KW, and Toronto regions of Ontario and believe it or not many in New York, Pennsylvania - and get this — the U.K. This always fascinated me.

Almost two years ago, circum- stances in my life changed dramatical- ly. I no longer have a horse farm or even own a horse. For the past 18 months I have worked hard at keeping ENN going, but given that priority now had to be on my marketing agency’s growth, and the fact that I was no longer involved in the horse industry in a big way, (I am still the President of the Upper Canada Equestrian Associa- tion), it was becoming harder and hard- er to get the information and find the time to put the publications together each week. Realizing this, I decided it was time to sell ENN before I destroyed it. And this is how Barry Finn, editor/publisher of The Rider came in to the picture.

I had always thought that ENN would be a perfect fit to grow The Rider and apparently Barry thought so as well. I am pleased that Barry sees the potential of Equine Niagara News and truly believe that he will continue to keep the equestrians in Niagara informed and will receive the praise and followers of this area as I did. The

ry. Prize monies totalled $112,500.00.

The Canadian Finals Rodeo cow- boys were keeping a close eye on the standings as they worked their way into the final standings to qualify.

Appaloosa Cheap Stakes Races reached the $100,000 mark milestone.

The First National Finals Girls Rodeo Association had the top ten girl contestants in the nation at San Anto- nio, Texas.

Belgium, Ireland, USA & Canada had entries in the 1978 International Jumping event at the Royal Horse Show.

equestrian community in Niagara is very strong and supportive of those that support them. Given all that has hap- pened in the horse industry this year, it is imperative to keep this support strong. Barry will do that!

While ENN is no longer mine, I have not walked away totally. I will still write articles here and there and report on events from Niagara. I am looking forward to continuing this rela- tionship for a long time as it was very difficult to give up ‘my baby’ in ENN. This decision was made easier knowing it is in good hands with Barry Finn and The Rider.
