The SmartPak AQHA West Novice Championship and Nutrena AQHA East Novice Championship shows were held October 4-7 2012. The exhibitors in the West filled the arena at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, and the exhibitors in the East saddled up at the Tennessee Miller Colise- um in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. With nearly 5000 entries in total the exhibitors were enthusiastic and excited about this opportu- nity to compete in any of the 12 events that include halter, west- ern and English disciplines. Congratulations to all the Ontario winners and finalists and thank you to Patti Carter- Pratt and the AQHA team and many volunteers who made these first Novice Champi- onship Shows such a huge suc- cess. OQHA 2012 Congress Youth Team
Each year OQHA is very proud to send a team of top youth exhibitors to represent the province at the National Youth Activity Team Tournament at the All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio. As the OQHA Youth Advisor I would like to present to you the youth who are representing Ontario for 2012.
Tyler Cressman
Seventeen year old, Tyler Cressman, lives in Linwood, Ontario with his parents, Joy and Todd. As a family they enjoy showing and raising future show prospects. He serves as an Area 2 Director at Large.
Currently in his first year at Conestoga College, Tyler is studying Robotics and Automa- tion.
Riding since he was seven, Tyler has had a successful show year with his 6 year old gelding, One Hot Krysam (Sonny). This will be his third year showing at the Congress where he has placed in the top ten and as a finalist in showmanship. He is looking forward to com- peting in Horsemanship at the NYATT.
For next year, Tyler’s goal is to show a new horse in a vari- ety of events.
Alex Cross-Nicholls
Alex believes that horses are animals that seem to make everything better as, to her, they have a way to make all prob- lems and troubles disappear.
The 18 year old lives in Smithville, Ontario and current- ly attends Brock University where she is enrolled in the Bachelor’s of Kinesiology pro- gram.
She has been riding since she was seven years old and has had the privilege of attending the All American Quarter Horse Congress for the past four years, three of them as a member of the Ontario Youth Team. In 2012, she will again be part of the Youth Team, competing in her favourite class, Showman- ship.
Alex considers being able to compete for Ontario a great achievement and is excited by the opportunity.
Erin Cross-Nicholls
Erin lives on a farm in Smithville, Ontario and attends Blessed Trinity Catholic High School in Grimsby. At 15 years old she has fulfilled her dream of horse ownership for the past 11 years.
She has been to the Congress four times and consid- ers it her favourite show. While there she’s competed in Walk- Jog, Novice Youth Showman- ship, Novice Youth Hunter Under Saddle and Youth Hunter Under Saddle.
Although she has never had the experience of winning any of her classes she has always enjoyed going there to try her best and to improve her skills.
Erin looks forward to going to the Congress every year and, this year, being an alternate on the Youth Team makes it even more exciting.
Lindsay Lehmann
Nineteen year old Lindsay Lehmann of Burford, Ontario has been riding since age six and competitive on the Quarter Horse circuit since she was 13 in both Western and English events.
Her accomplishments include being a Champion at the Tom Powers Futurity and Reichert Celebration, Reserve Champion at the Southern Belle Futurity and a semi-finalist at the AQHA Ford Youth World Show with her gelding, An Obvious Sixpack.
She has been a finalist at the Congress, earned an AQHA Youth Championship, a Superi- or Open Western Pleasure and has received many year end high point awards. Lindsay has also been a semi- finalist at the AQHA Youth World Show with her mare, A Sweet Version. When not showing, she enjoys working with young horses at her family’s farm,
boating, snowmobiling and spending time with friends. In her second year at the University of Guelph for Ani- mal Biology, she is a member of the IHSA Western Team there, competing in Reining and Horsemanship against schools throughout New York State. She will be competing in Western Pleasure with her horse, A Sweet Version.
Breanne Lywood
The 14 year old from Beamsville, Ontario has been riding since she was 6 and cur- rently trains with Scott Carmichael.
She has shown at different circuits from the Trillium Cir- cuit, showing Hunter Jumper, to now, the Quarter Horse Circuit. She has had a successful year qualifying for the Novice Championship show in Ten- nessee.
Breanne now attends blessed Trinity Secondary School in Grimsby and plans to participate in school sports and the annual Pilgrimage, which raises money for children in Third World Countries.
Breanne will be riding in honour of her grandmother, who passed away in 2011 after a long battle with cancer, but was a strong support system to Bre- anne’s riding.
Amanda Martini
The 15 year old from Ariss, Ontario has been riding since she was 3 years old, com- peting at local shows in Lead- Line.
Amanda began showing at Quarter Horse Shows 4 years ago in Showmanship and Walk- Jog. Going on to the 13 & under events in 2010, she won the Justin Rookie of the Year in Ontario. The Ontario High Point 13 & Under, for 2011 and a top 10 placing at the Congress are among her accomplish- ments.

By the time Taylor was 9 she had start- ed showing in the 13 and under events at the Quarter Horse Shows where she won many year end awards. When not at the barn with her horse, Taylor is taking care of her racing pigeons and loves to play tennis. She is currently in grade 8 at the Elora Public School.
Taylor started showing
Two Soxy in 2011 and looks forward to representing Ontario at the 2012 All American Quar- ter Horse Congress in Western Pleasure.
Nicole McComb
Nicole McComb resides in Lucan, Ontario. She comes from a family with no equine experience but began to take an interest in horses at age seven when she had the opportunity to ride a Shetland pony at her uncle’s farm.
As her interest grew, she purchased her first Quarter horse when she was ten, One Last Fantasy. With him, she began to take lessons and show at various club and open shows, competing at the area 1 Quarter Horse shows in Ilderton in the 13 and under classes. At the age of fourteen she purchased her second and current horse, Red Hot Cierra, from Ohio. Now 15 years old Nicole enjoys showing in the all round events at OQHA. She thanks Car- ruthers Quarter Horses for their help in training Red Hot Cierra and providing excellent instruction in showing.
She gives many thanks to the numerous people who over the years have made riding and showing possible for her.
Heidi Nelson
The 17 year old daughter of Scott and Colleen Nelson attends Elmira District Sec- ondary School where she com- petes on the high school eques- trian team, finishing as high- point all around rider in 2012. She started riding and showing at age 6, at Ontario Paint Horse shows and local shows in all around events.
Her interest turned to rein- ing and she purchased her first Quarter Horse, Ha Diamond Lady, in 2010 to compete in the Ontario Reining Horse Associa- tion shows. In 2010, she was Reserve Champion Green as Grass, and Reserve Champion Youth 14 -18 in the ORHA. In 2011, Heidi started showing at Quarter Horse shows for the first time in Ontario and Michigan in reining and work- ing cow horse, earning year end awards in both associations. Heidi and ‘Lady’ also attended the Congress for the first time in 2011 with the Ontario NYATT team.
For 2012, Heidi has been showing Lady in reining, cow horse, ranch horse pleasure and the occasional western riding class just for fun. Heidi notes “Lady is no longer just a reining horse. She’s finally figuring out the all-around events and is doing really well. She tries really hard to please, she’s real- ly quiet and nothing fazes her”. Heidi would like to thank her parents and her reining coach, Greg Crispin, for all of the help and support she’s had for the past few years.

Equipment Rule Changes_ The goal of protecting our American Quarter Horses has led the AQHA Executive Com- mittee to make changes in AQHA rules as far as equip- ment use at all AQHA shows and approve a structure of fines and penalties that will be assessed to violators of these
Kathy Patterson
rules. All of these changes are based on recommendations from the AQHA Animal Wel- fare Commission, which was appointed earlier this year by the Executive Committee to ensure the welfare of the Ameri- can Quarter Horse. The Execu- tive Committee also approved the Animal Welfare Commis- sion’s definition of abuse: Any excessive and/or repetitive action to cause obvious distress or discomfort to a horse. Fines and penalties have been estab- lished to deter people who might think about abusing a horse or using illicit drugs. It is the goal of AQHA to bring about change and protect our horse and our industry. For more information and a com- plete update on these and other rule changes visit
