Tranquil Acres located in Kars ON, just outside the Ottawa city centre offers a program unlike any other. Minis for Senior’s is an Equine Assisted Program directed towards senior care. With the assistance of miniature horses, seniors are provided with the opportunity to partici- pate in several dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, social and vocation. Some of the benefits in introducing horses to seniors are relieving stress, combating loneliness, overcoming depression, increasing energy and pro- moting active living to name a few. After inviting a local senior home to

tour our facility in July we seen many smiles and heard great stories. Tranquil Acres customizes each senior’s facility or group to allow seniors the opportunity to participate hands on experience. Programs are designed to included grooming, leading a mini horses true an uncomplicated obstacle course, or simply just spending time with a horse. Tranquil Acres believe engaged seniors lead richer and more satisfying lives, and every day is another opportunity for growth. Tranquil Acres is fast approaching our 1st year anniversary allowing horses helping people of all ages and abilities.

As part of this project, therapeu- tic riding centres that offer new com- petitive opportunities, or increase their existing competition program to riders with a disability will be eligi- ble to receive a grant of up to $500. After the first series of the sea- son came to a close, a total of four grants of $500 each were awarded to the following centres:

• North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association, Maple Ridge, BC • The Equestrian Association for The Disabled, Mount Hope, ON • Lanark County Therapeutic Riding Program, Carleton Place, ON • Willowbank Equestrian Centre, Plantagenet, ON

Some examples of how the grants will help therapeutic riding centres introduce riders to Para- equestrian sport include: the pur- chase of video equipment to film rid- ers competing in video competitions,

improved coaching, travel subsidies and funding for a new para-dressage ring.

About Para-Equestrian Sport Para-Equestrian sport provides riders with a physical disability the opportunity to compete against other riders with similar abilities. Riders are given a “Grade” based on their functional ability, and are judged on their riding skill against other ath- letes of the same Grade. There are five grades of competitions in dres- sage, with Grade IA representing the more severely impaired riders, and Grade IV representing the least severely impaired riders. Many Para- Equestrian athletes also compete alongside able-bodied competitors in Equine Canada competitions. At the grass roots level, Para-Equestrian encompasses a number of different disciplines, while the international stream focuses only on Para-Dres- sage.
