Cool Colours and more!
October 6th was a pic- ture perfect day for the Ganaraska Forest Horse Club’s “Cool Colours” ride. It was sunny and crisp and 48 horses and their humans had a thoroughly enjoyable hack winding our way through sandy trails in the East Forest. Riders had the option of going out in small groups and following the markers. As long as we remembered the fluorescent tape should hang on our right side, with added attention at forks in the trail, all was good (admittedly with a few U-turns thrown in for the navigationally-chal- lenged). Alternatively, a guid- ed ride set out together with no risk of confusion. One of the women in my group trav- elled from Belleville (about
an hour and a half) because there is nothing like it in her area. We’re so lucky to have these beautiful trails within driving distance - hard not to feel gratitude on a gorgeous Thanksgiving weekend! Today Brock and I set off to join three other GFHC members and their steeds for our two night “bed and bale” riding adventure at Kendal Hills. In contrast to our sanc- tioned rides, we do require a membership or day pass... and a sense of direction. We’re planning to meet at the Central Forest for our first hack and then trailer over to our accommodations. For Thursday’s ride we’ll be in the West Forest and Friday is still up for grabs. Even if it rains, the towering pines are surprisingly protective. With-
in one week we’ll have “tast- ed” a fraction of the Ganaras- ka Forest’s 11,000 acres! The GFHC’s Halloween Ride has been shifted to Sat- urday October 27th with a rain date back up on the fol- lowing day. This is a fun opportunity to nurture your inner creative flair and dress up your horse, and/or your- self. Those of you who aren’t riding and want an introduc- tion to the area can come to check out the costumes - bring your camera - it’s sure to be a hoot. See our website for directions.
The board is currently setting the 2013 schedule so be sure to check out
www.gfhc.ca regularly to see what’s ahead. In the meantime, hold Satur- day, March 9th for our annual fundraising dinner dance at
On the trail
the Millbrook Legion and Sun- day, April 21st for the AGM at the Forest Centre.
This club couldn’t run without the dedication and hard work of all our volunteers and property owners that neighbour the forest and host some of our rides. The board of directors (named on the ban-
ner) take the brunt of that load. If you share my enthusiasm for the Ganaraska Forest Horse Club and all our benefits, please consider volunteering a bit of time on the day or our events to direct the parking, register the riders, barbecue burgers or help with the clean up. If you’d like to sit on the
board that’s also an option. Email
gfhc-1@live.ca to offer assistance.
All the best for the holi- days, enjoy the Royal Winter Fair and we’ll see you on the trails soon - may the horse be with you!

Healthy horses are the key to a sustainable equine industry. Biosecurity plays a vital role in both individual horse and herd health. To help assess current biosecu- rity practices and training needs at breeding farms, breeding farm owners are invited to participate in a research study being coordi- nated by Dr. Ulrika Gron- lund Andersson and Dr. Scott Weese from the Uni- versity of Guelph. The con- fidential survey will take between 45 - 60 minutes to complete.
If you have any ques- tions about this study, please contact Dr. Scott Weese of the Department of Pathobi- ology, University of Guelph at 519-824-4120 ext 54064 or
jsweese@uoguelph.ca. Take this survey online at:http://www.easyre-
