The striking silver and red seats scat- tered around the square were designed by Carmela Bogman in conjunction with Dutch landscape specialists HOSPER. They are made from folded steel sheets, and lit by Philips BBB451 warm white in-ground LEDs. At the base of the larger tower is a water feature with the individual jets illuminated by 49 specially developed AWB (amber, white, blue) colour mix fountain LED mod- ules at their bases. These were supplied by Aquafontanal.


The whole lighting system is DMX controlled and run via three Pharos LPC controllers sta- tioned in a technical room near the smaller tower, which also houses all the drivers and other control elements. The system has the capacity to operate any extra lighting that may be added for special events.


The default scenes and sequences were programmed into the Pharos controllers by site project manager Geert Moors, and once again, the Painting With Light team found their experience of designing entertainment systems was invaluable in completing the process quickly and efficiently. On the practical side, there were many challenges. As well as keeping energy consumption to a miminum (the entire site’s LEDs draw just 28kW of power) and avoiding light pollution and spill, Peumans and his team had to keep four different architectural practices – responsible for various aspects of the site - in the loop and on side. These included Hanneke Kijne from ALLE HOSPER, responsible for landscaping of the Square, who was integrally involved in the development of the lighting vision, and overall C-Mine Experience architect, Halewijn Lievens from NU-Architects. Peumans received many comments about how well the lighting matched the initial

Nach einem kürzlich erfolgten Sanierungsprojekt wurde der Winterslag Mine am Stadtrand von Genk in Belgien in ‘C-Mine’ umgetauft – eine neuer Hub für Kreativ- ität, Technologie, Tourismus und Erziehung. Zusätzlich zu einer neuen ‘C-Mine Erfahrung’, die die Besucher mit auf einen Rundgang durch die alten Grubenstol- len nimmt, integriert das neue Zentrum zwei Theater, ein Multiplex-Kino und eine hochmoderne Medien-, Kunst- und Design-Fakultät (MAD) für die nahegele- gene Universität von Hasselt. Aus architektonischer Sicht verschmelzt der komplette C-Mine das zwei Jahrhunderte alte industrielle Erbe mit ergänzendem modernen Design, welches ein dramatisches Projekt durch die kreative Beleuchtungsdesign-Praxis Paint- ing With Light unter Leitung von Luc Peumans inte- griert. Für den öffentlichen Bereich hat sich Peumans für einen ‘offenen Wohn-Ansatz’ entschieden, bei dem Raum durch die Ausrichtung der Beleuchtung weg


vom Zentrum des Platzes freigesetzt wird. Dies hat den zusätzlichen Vorteil, dass die Aufmerksamkeit auf die umliegenden Strukturen, insbesondere auf die Zech- entürme verlagert wird, die das Kernstück der gesam- ten Stätte bilden. Das Team verwendete hauptsächlich verchromte LED-Beleuchtung innerhalb der Metallteile der Türme und eingebaut in die Architektur der um- liegenden Bereiche.

In seguito ad un progetto recente di restauro, la Miniera Winterslag nei sobborghi di Genk in Belgio, è rinata come “C-Mine” - un nuovo centro creativo, tecnologico, turistico ed educativo. In aggiunta ad una “Nuova Esperienza “C-Mine”, che conduce i visitatori in un tour attraverso le gallerie della vecchia miniera, il nuovo centro incorpora due teatri, un cinema multi- sala, ed una Facoltà avanzata di Comunicazione, Arte e Immagine per la vicina Università di Hasselt. un patrimonio culturale industriale di due secoli fa con una progettazione moderna, compreso uno schema di illuminazione plateale realizzato dallo studio di pro- gettazione Painting White Light, sotto la guida di Luc Peumans. Per la piazza pubblica, Peumans ha adot- tato un approccio “a spazio aperto”, liberando spazio e spostando le luci al di fuori del centro della piazza. Ciò ha come vantaggio ulteriore quello di spostare l’attenzione sulle strutture circostanti, ed in particolare verso gli ascensori della miniera, attrazione principale di tutta la struttura. La squadra operativa ha utiliz- zato maggiormente illuminazione al LED contenuta sia all’interno della struttura in metallo degli ascensori sia all’interno dell’architettura degli spazi circostanti.

Seguido a un proyecto de regeneración reciente, la Mina de Winterslag en las afueras de Genk en Bélgica se ha convertido en C-Mine - un nuevo centro para la creatividad, la tecnología, el turismo y la educación.


Además de la nueva Experiencia C-Mine, en la que los visitantes realizan tours en los viejos túneles de la mina, el nuevo centro ha incorporado dos teatros, un cine de pantalla múltiple y una Facultad de Me- dios, Arte y Diseño con lo último en tecnología para la cercana Universidad de Hasselt. Arquitectónica- mente hablando, el sitio entero de C-Mine fusiona la herencia industrial que data de hace dos siglos con un diseño complementario moderno, que incluye un tema dramático mediante la práctica del diseño de iluminación creativo, Painting with Lights, bajo el liderazgo de Luc Peumans. Para la plaza pública, Peumans adoptó un “living abierto”, liberando espacio al mover las luces del centro de la plaza. Ello tiene la ventaja adicional de cambiar la atención hacia las estructuras de alrededor, en particular a las torres de los elevadores de la mina de carbón que conforman el elemento principal del sitio entero. El equipo utilizó principalmente iluminación LED oculta dentro la car- pintería de metal de las torres y construida dentro de la arquitectura de los espacios de alrededor.
