OASIS Wimmera
OASIS Wimmera is a multicultural social group that was established in 2010, aimed at supporting and assisting overseas migrants to integrate in Australian society and understand the cultural transition between Australia and their country of origin. Social events are organised on a regular basis, enabling people to get to know each other and to ease their transition into the local community and Australian culture.
Horsham Rural City Council was involved in the establishment of OASIS Wimmera and is an ongoing supporter of this important community group.
Jellybeans Multi Cultural
Customer Service
Charter Horsham Rural City Council has developed a Customer Service Charter. The charter sets out standards and procedures to ensure that customer service is provided in a way that respects human rights.
Playgroup Horsham Rural City Council has established Jellybeans, a multicultural playgroup for pre-school aged children. Jellybeans is supported by the Wimmera Settlement Program and a team of volunteers, and sessions are held fortnightly throughout school terms. Jellybeans off ers an opportunity for children from diff erent cultures to have fun, make new friends and develop new skills through informal play. It also provides an opportunity for parents and carers to meet.
Wimmera Skilled Migration E-waste
Program Horsham Rural City Council is a lead member and supporter of the Wimmera Development Association, which operates the Wimmera Southern Mallee Skilled Migration Program, aimed at bringing skilled professionals from overseas to our region. The program works with local businesses and organisations to fi ll skills gaps with professionals from overseas, where positions cannot otherwise be fi lled locally. In 2011-12, 77 skilled professionals moved to the Wimmera through this important program.
Disability Access Plan
Horsham Rural City Council has commenced a review of the Disability Access Plan. The review will include an extensive community consultation process and consideration of the human rights principles.
In December 2011, Horsham Rural City Council reached agreement with AXIS Worx to process our e-waste product. The e-waste facility has provided employment for 15 Supported Employees, off ering them employment options including the use of state-of-the-art machinery and equipment in a purpose-built modern facility (see page 29).
Think Women for Local
Government Forum Horsham Rural City Council hosted a Think Women for Local Government forum in May 2012.
Guest speaker was Cr Diana Asmar, Deputy Mayor of Darebin City Council, and the fi rst woman in Australia to be elected as Mayor whilst pregnant (see page 39).
